Celebrate the Casablanca Lily

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Last week my senses were bombarded with the sights, sounds, tastes and feelings (emotional not physical) of the 4th of July. I know many people who delight in the smells associated with the 4th, however my olfactory system seems to ignore the acrid scent of the fireworks or the sweet smoky smell of barbecue. After a week of feeling ignored my sense of smell received a long awaited treat. With every breath, the intoxicating aroma coming from the Casablanca Lilies that were blooming in my garden captivated my nose.

Adam’s Needle Yucca isn’t blooming.

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Ask the Expert: My Adam’s Needle has not bloomed in years.
I see others in the neighbourhood, that are ok so I know it is not the weather. I have one in a planter at the side of the house facing west. The other is nearby, but in a pot. Neither has bloomed in 5 years, although they appear to be expanding with new rosettes.
Thanks for your help.

Suzi Wong Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) heading for problems.

Ask the Expert: about Suzi Wong ferns

My Suzy Wong fern is getting brown and dry around the edges and bottom. It hasn’t had any new growth in quite a while and I really think it’s just slowly dying. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it, but it seems some fruit flies, or tiny little flies of some sort have taken up residence in the soil. Also, I keep the soil moist, and it sits in indirect light. Can you help? THANK YOU!

Ask the Expert: What kind of tree is this?

My husband and I bought a house and this tree was already there. We are not gardeners to begin with so we had little luck identifying this tree! I hope you can help us! tree.JPG

More than fireworks on the 4th of July.

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

It’s late afternoon on July 3rd and I realized tomorrow is the 4th of July. July is the best month of the year. The country and I celebrate our birthdays this month. Every year, I celebrate the 4th of July with flowers — red, white and blue. This flower arrangement is to remind me that the 4th of July is more than

HELP!

I have this plant that my daughter sent to me two years ago. It had been doing OK but is now losing lots of leaves which are turning brown at the tips then the whole leaf turns and falls off. I recently replanted it and separated the roots in hopes that it would grow taller. Could it be in shock? I am not sure if I am over
