Wilted English Ivy

Ask the Expert: my dying English Ivy

I have an English ivy that I purchased in a small container and a few days later replanted. It immediately began losing leaves, after they turned brown of course, and now I have a few sticks and a few leaves.
It is in filtered sun light.
Should I pray for it and see what happens?  Audrey

Fresh Flower Arrangements In The Strangest Places

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I believe that every room deserve a fresh flower arrangement and that every one should receive or send fresh flowers at least once a year (although the more times the better). But, yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to find a flower arrangement in a place that you don’t often see them — a public bathroom.

Ask the Expert: Plant Identification

Hello,
I spotted this plant in the ‘Postman’s Park’ near St. Pauls Cathedral. I find it’s unusual dual style of flowers very attractive and would like to acquire a sample for my own garden. I was wondering if anyone could kindly identify it for me?
Many thanks,

John

Ask the Expert: Can I move and re-plant a bamboo plant

My friend is getting rid of her bamboo plant and I said I’d love to have it but I’m unsure if its safe to dig up and move the bamboo plant and re-plant it somewhere else.  Do you have any tips to ensure it survives?  The soil I will be planting it in is hard and has shade in places and sun in others.  I look forward to your response.

Ask the Expert: Babies on my ponytail plant

I inherited a pony tail plant about 20 years ago.  Recently, It had three babies, growing between the middle and top of the plant.  Do they have to be removed?  Will they hurt my plant if I leave them be?  If I did remove them, can I root them?  If yes, how?  Thank you, I really love this plant!

Flower Gifts Even A Crab Will Enjoy

Friday, June 20th, 2008

The end of June and the beginning of July mark the end of spring and the beginning of summer. People that fall under the Cancer zodiac sign are very aware of this mix of natural wonder. Those born between June 21 and July 22 find in themselves this same need to be both calm and feisty, cool and robust. Finding a birthday gift for Cancers can be challenging but there is one gift that soothes them all.

An arrangement of flowers corresponding with the Cancer zodiac sign is quite an amazing gift. Roses make incredibly beautiful arrangements and perfectly suit a vivacious and caring Cancer. Cornflower and delphinium arrangements speak to the softer, sweeter, and more colorful side of your beloved. A plant may also be a nice choice for Cancers who tend to be very protective, nurturing, and supportive. Ferns are a beautiful plant associated with the Cancer zodiac sign and make wonderful additions to any home.

Your sweetheart is likely a very loving, devoted person. As she does with her personality, capture the natural wonder of spring and the intense adventure of summer in a gift that shows just how much you love her also. Contact your local florist and send your favorite crab a flower arrangement today!

Iowa Florists Brave Storms and Floods

Friday, June 20th, 2008

The effects of the horrible floods that have recently affected Iowa are being felt nationwide. Iowa florists, though exhibiting a tenacious resilience, are facing a major challenge as many flower shops are under as much as ten feet of water.

According to a recent online article from the Society of American Florists, Flower Shop Network member Todd Krieger is among the florists in Iowa who were struck by the recent floods and storms. Krieger’s Greenhouses & Floral in Mason City spent more than 36 hours under 2 feet of water causing Mr. Krieger to close for five days. The damage is still present and remains a daily reminder of the struggle that many Iowa residents are facing in the coming months.

Flower Shop Network member florists in Cedar Rapids are also experiencing difficulties due to flooding. Al Pierson of Pierson’s Flower Shop has been removed from the main location of his shop and operating out of a second location on higher ground. Sally Stejskal of Stejskal Florists, Inc. escaped the flooding by a mere one-half mile. Ms. Stejskal, who has compassionately taken in an employee whose family was affected by flooding, is also feeling the pangs of witnessing her local community in disarray.

Flower Shop Network would like to extend our sympathy and support to these and other Midwestern florists affected by the tragic storms and floods. The endurance and vigilant spirits of these incredible survivors is truly inspirational to us all. For more information about disaster relief and learn how to help flood survivors visit the American Red Cross or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
