Lucky Bamboo Care: Changing the Water and Container

Ask the Expert: Bamboo plant
I bought a very small bamboo plant that needed some care. It seems to be coming back with some new growth. It’s in about a three inch square container. When do they need to be transplanted, can you use any type of container, does it take special rocks to put it in, how often does the water need to be replaced?  Michelle

I assume you are asking about a lucky bamboo plant and not real bamboo, since it is growing in water.  The nice thing about lucky bamboo is that it is fairly easy to care for and does not require a lot of space to [Read more…]

How To Fertilize A Green Island Fig Bonsai

Ask the Expert: Fertilization of Green Island Fig Bonsai

How often should you fertilize a Green Island Fig? I haven’t fertilized mine yet because I thought it was in dormancy. Then the bottom leaves of every branch have one by one turned yellow with spots. I figure this is because I have not fertilized it yet, but I’m really not sure. I want to save it!!  I would greatly appreciate your help!! Ains.

The yellow leaves are probably due to stress rather than lack of fertilizer.  Green Island Fig is a member of [Read more…]

What Plants Can Be Used Like Lucky Bamboo?

Ask the Expert: Grown in water with pebbles
Can Dragon trees/plants be grown in water with pebbles? If not, what plants can be grown in water with pebbles besides “lucky bamboo”? I would really appreciate your help!! Ains

Reply:
Ains,

Dragon trees (Dracaena marginata) is not one that I would grow in water. My suggestion is to use one of these four plants:

Equisetum hyemale – Horsetail
Juncus effusus spiralis – Corkscrew Rush
Lysimachia nummularia – Creeping Jenny
Acornus gramineus – Sweet flag

Horsetail (Equisetum hyemale)

Horsetail

You should be able to plant these the same way you would lucky bamboo. My favorite is the horsetail because it texture, color and up right growth pattern. Horsetail is very versatile and can be used as a cut foliage as well as a potted plant or a landscaping plant.

This photo of Equisetum hyemale was provide by Dr. Amadej Trnkoczy through CalPhotos.

See what I mean about the texture and color. Horsetail is a very interesting plant. My aunt uses it at the edge of her pond and I love the unique element it give to the landscaping.

Corkscrew Rush

The next three images come from Ball Horticulture.

I have grown the Corkscrew Rush as a potted plant but not as a bog plant. However, I have known other who have and they like the curly yet smooth texture of the leaves.

Creeping Jenny

Creeping Jenny

Creeping Jenny is another very versatile plant. My aunt with the pond uses it as a cascading plant at the top of the waterfall. Part of the plant grows in the water and part in the soil.

Sweet Flag

Sweet Flag

Sweet flag is another plant that my aunt uses along the edge of her pond in the shadier areas. It seems to like the water; but of all the plants, I find this one the least interesting. However, it will give you the fullest look.

Any one of these plants could be used in the same fashion as lucky bamboo. Your choice will depend on the texture, color and growth pattern you prefer. Some local flower shops and most nursery garden center will carry these plant varieties. Our nursery carries all of them and we usually sell the Horsetail as a water plant. Good luck and keep me posted. I’m excited to see which one you choose. Send me a picture when you make your choice and I’ll post it.

Plant Care For Poinsettias Planted Outside

Ask the Expert: when do I need to prune my outdoor poinsettia’s?
I have been told they might get damaged if to big in a Hurricane.  So please help me know how to protect them.  Lucky Lady

Reply:

I assume that you live where the temperature doesn’t go below 45 degrees with no frost (or at least very light frost).  Poinsettias can not live outside where the temperatures drop below 45 degrees and they can not tolerate frost.  Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) originate in Mexico and thrive in the heat. They can grow up to 8-10 feet tall but without regular pruning they will become leggy and week. Therefore you need to prune your poinsettias encourage a bushier and stronger plant. You will need to cut old growth back severely in late winter just before any new growth begins. This will encourage the plant to branch which will make the plant bushier and stranger. Several times during the spring and summer pinch the terminal shoots. Stop all pruning your poinsettia around the middle of August.

To get it to bloom follow the same light guidelines for potted poinsettias.

Hope this information is helpful.

Why Do I Have Cloudy Water In My Lucky Bamboo Container?

Ask the Expert: Cloudy water in bamboo

I have read a bit about the bamboo, including a question from another person, but am still in the dark.
I have had several bamboo pieces for three years now, and just recently the leaves started to turn brown and the water was smelly and cloudy.  I have cleaned the stems and roots, as well as the rocks and containers, but they still turn the same.  This has never happened before.  I feel horrible that I have to throw one out because it has grown to over 3 feet!  Please help!  Alexis

I Just Found The Neatest Idea For Funeral Flowers!

Ok, maybe “cool” is not the word but it’s definitely interesting.

I was reading the blog of Belvedere Flowers, a florist in Havertown Pennsylvania, when I discovered their clever tip for creating an arrangement of funeral flowers using calla lilies and Bells of Ireland. I never really figured calla lilies for sympathy flowers. I always saw calla lilies as a wedding flower or great for Easter and altar flower arrangements.

However, after seeing this grandiose sympathy arrangement from Belvedere Flowers, I’m inspired by the calming appeal of these flowers. They are so peaceful and beautiful. The light green Bells of Ireland just added to the placid nature of the arrangement. It doesn’t overwhelm the senses with bold color. These aren’t forceful flowers which announce their beauty to the world. These are very subtle, gentle and beautiful flowers which, when put together by Belvedere Flowers, are a very respectful showing of condolence.

Last Minute Fresh Flower Decorating Tips For Christmas

Crimson and Cream Bouquet of Fresh Flowers

Crimson and Cream Bouquet of Fresh Flowers

With Christmas Eve just a day away and Christmas Day just after that, it’s very likely that you already have your Christmas decorations up and out. However, some decorations are just better when brought out the day of or the day before the occasion. Any person that wants to decorate with fresh flowers should consider this unspoken rule.

While time is of the essence as the holiday crunch begins, there’s no need to worry about adding a whole bunch of time to your holidays. Just relax because these fresh flower decorating tips are quick, easy and beautiful:

  • Two to three days before your holiday dinner, pick up a Christmas flower arrangement from your local florist. This can be placed on the family table before the meal and easily moved when the food is being served. While guests are mingling, a colorful arrangement can serve as a festive centerpiece.
  • Another fun idea is to ask your local florist for stems of flowers. Single flowers can be sporadically placed in the midst of the Christmas tree branches to add a fresh flair. The deep green of a Christmas tree creates a lovely backdrop for poinsettias and other known holiday flowers, but other flowers might be easier to find in single stems. As with any fresh flower idea, decorate with these items within 1-3 days of the holiday.
  • “Oh by gosh, by golly. It’s time for mistletoe and holly.” While Frank and Bing sing this little ditty, get in the spirit by hanging bunches of mistletoe in the doorposts. These beautiful little berries can also be used as placecard holders. Take a small sprig and insert a placecard between the stems. This is a very festive decoration that guests will love.

These fun ideas take almost no time but add a significant bit of decor to the home. Guests will love your creative use of fresh flowers.

Flower Meanings That Guarantee A Happy Holly-day

While we normally highlight the meanings of flowers, there is also much to be said with special foliage such as myrtle, holly, fir, pine and moss. These are often used in holiday flower arrangements and create a wonderful ambiance that helps set the arrangement apart from the rest. While others are trolling through stores in search of the perfectly generic gift, contact your local florist to create a holiday arrangement that is both unique and meaningful. Holidays mean the world to some people. Show those people that they mean the world to you with these unique gifts.

Traditional Christmas Holly

Holly brings out the fun of an Old Fashioned Christmas!

People of all ages recognize holly as one of the premier decorations of the holiday season. What people don’t know about holly is that the primary flower meaning of holly is domestic happiness. It’s hard to turn away any opportunity to wish domestic happiness on someone. Another meaning of holly is defense or protection. Holly is the perfect gift idea for wishing a safe and happy household over someone. For that matter, wish yourself a safe and happy household by decorating your home with holly this Christmas.

Christmas Myrtle

Myrtle makes the Red and White Stripes arrangement a holiday hit!

Myrtle is a widely recognized foliage that is blessed with positive flower meanings. Myrtle may be especially recognizable to Jewish couples as it is a Hebrew emblem of marriage. For other couples, myrtle represents love. It is always a good time to show someone that they are loved by you. Sending an arrangement such as the Red and White Stripes Christmas flower arrangement is a wonderful way to express many wonderful feelings of love, luck, fascination and holiday cheer.

Your local florist can help create majestic flower arrangements, bouquets and even gift baskets for the holidays that use foliage with sweet flower meanings. The best gift idea this year isn’t in a store; it’s in a flower shop.
