Time to get EGG-cited!

Easter garden arrangement by Crossroads Florist, Mahwah NJ

People everywhere are starting to put more creativity into holiday celebrations that ever before. (I blame Pinterest.) Easter is no exception. Growing up, I think I looked forward to wearing a hat to church more than anything. Now kids practically celebrate the entire month with Easter bunny pictures, school activities, extreme egg dying, hiding chocolate coins for the Easter bunny and even more activities I have never heard of before, plus candy candy candy!

With all the Easter chaos, having your family gathered together for group activities might make it worth it after all. Dying eggs for Easter is a long-standing tradition that is fun for family members of all ages.

Every year, Americans dye and decorate more than 180 million eggs during the Easter season.

History of Dying Eggs

The Easter egg tradition started by merging with the celebration of the final provisions of Lent. Historically, eggs were forbidden during Lent, but chickens continued to lay eggs. Eggs would have been hard-boiled so they wouldn’t go to waste. This began the tradition of decorating eggs and feasting on egg-filled meals during the time of Easter. Symbolically, the hard shell of the egg represented the sealed Tomb of Christ — the cracking of which symbolized his resurrection from the dead.

Egg Dying & Decorating Ideas

Like I said earlier, with the rise of Pinterest, there are more ideas out there for dying and decorating eggs than ever before.

  • 1. Wrap eggs in rubber bands to create stripes of white or colors (fully dye the egg first, then rubber band and dye again).
  • 2. Simply use markers to decorate. (Great for small kids who might not be ready for the ‘mess’.) [Read more…]

The Floral Olympics at the Great Lakes Floral Expo 2013

The Floral Olympics at the Great Lakes Floral Expo

Back around the first of March the FSN crew attended one of the biggest floral design shows in the nation – the Great Lakes Floral Expo. One of their big themes this year was ‘Floral Olympics’. All of the programs, workshops and seminars dealt with Reaching for Excellence and Going for Gold.

 Floral Olympics Floral Olympics

Just like in the real Olympics, the Great Lakes Floral Expo had a grand Opening Ceremonies presented by Carolyn Clark Kurek, AIFD. Carolyn demonstrated the application of the principles and elements of design using contorting gymnasts. She would talk about a specific element of design and the contortionist would use their body to demonstrate. As you can imagine, this presentation has gotten rave reviews!

Other Olympic themed programs include: Your Gold Medal Staff, The Balance Beam of Successful Weddings, Floral Olympic Awards Gala and more.

Flowers Imitating Monkeys

Flowers Imitating Monkeys

I saw this photo floating around the internet this week and had to share with our readers. We’ve all seen mimicry in nature, mostly with insects, but have you ever seen it this clear? At first glance, you might think these are little baby monkeys! I was blown away by the incredible characteristics these orchids share with primates.

The orchids above with the little monkey faces are Dracula simia, which translates to Little Dragon Monkey. The flowers are fragrant with the scent of a ripe orange. They are native to the cloud forests of southeast Ecuador, and as such not many people throughout history have seen them.

The flowers above that look like little dancing monkeys are called Orchis simia. They are found in Europe, the Mediterranean, Russia, Asia Minor and Iran. These you might not want in your garden since they smell strongly of feces.

While these exotic flowers may not be readily available, stop by your local florist to preview your local selection of orchid house plants.

First Day of Spring – Celebrate Spring Equinox

Ah, spring! This season brings more sunshine, warming temperatures, and the rebirth of flowers everywhere.

Warsaw Equinox Festival PhotoThe first day of spring is also the Vernal equinox. The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Days and nights are both approximately 12 hours long, with daytime increasing afterwards. Spring is heralded by the blooming of deciduous magnolias, quince, tulips and daffodils. Life everyone seems to ‘spring forth’.

The celebration of spring takes place in all corners of the world — from India’s Holi color festival, to the hot air balloon festival at the Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico, people everywhere celebrate this ancient solar holiday.

What do many of these celebrations have in common?

  • Spring Flowers – Flowers have been an steady constant in spring celebrations throughout time for people all across the globe. From the symbolic Easter lily that represents a person’s faith in western cultures, to gifts, offerings and blessings of flowers to gods and ancestors in many eastern cultures — flowers are an essential part of most spring celebrations.
  • Spring Cleaning – We do it every year to prepare for summer fun, and you know how great it makes you feel to clear out the junk that seems to pile up during the cold months. In many cultures, the spring clean is a crucial part of practicing their faith.

How can you celebrate spring?

  • Decorate your home – Use spring colors and lots of fresh flowers. Replace anything using dark, winter colors with a fresh new breath of spring.
  • Celebrate family heritage – Take some time to research how your ancestors might have celebrated the solar holiday. For instance, if you come from an ancient Celt background, you might light a bonfire to observe the ancient Gaelic spring festival of Imbolc, in honor your past.
  • Family reunion – That’s what they do in Japan for the vernal equinox, in addition to visiting family graves.
  • A day for Mom – Honor mom with springtime gifts, including flowers and plants. In many Arab countries, the period of the equinox is set aside to honor mothers. Yes, we have Mother’s Day for that, but why wait when you can double her joy?
  • Sunrise celebration – Throughout time, cultures all across the globe have celebrated during sunrise on the morning of the vernal equinox. Why not wake up a little early just to watch the sun rise, especially if the weather is warm enough?

There’s no right or wrong way to celebrate the beginning of spring. Find your own way to welcome the new and highly anticipated season. If you have any suggestions, please add them in the comments below!
