Happy Thanksgiving 2015 from FSN

Flower Shop Network wishes you a wonderful Thanksgiving with family, friends, and lots of delicious food!

Thanksgiving Arrangements from the About Flowers Blog

Still looking for the perfect Thanksgiving arrangement? Here are some truly creative designs, of turkeys and cornucopias with flowers, from our friends at SAF’s blog, aboutflowersblog.com.

Turkeys and Cornucopia
by Stephen Rittner
Two major symbols for Thanksgiving are Turkeys and Cornucopia. It is amazing and fun to combine these symbols with flowers for wonderful floral designs for the holiday.

Benjamin Franklin suggested that this wonderful and tasty bird become a national symbol. Unfortunately for the turkey it didn’t make the cut, losing to the bald eagle, and instead became our favorite food for the Thanksgiving holiday. A famous myth of the Thanksgiving holiday is that turkey was served for the first Thanksgiving. We don’t know if that was really true. It could have very well been goose, or something else. Turkeys throughout the continent are advocates of this “first goose” theory … along with promoting ham or even salmon for the holiday. Regardless of turkey politics, your guests will definitely enjoy not only the culinary turkey but also floral designs that incorporate the turkey as a visual symbol.

A wicker container in the shape of our favorite holiday bird can be the source of many festive floral designs…..

Quality Blooms From Severna Flowers

Bill Dyott knows quality flowers come from a shop with experience. Since 1977, Severna Flowers and Gifts in Severna Park, Maryland, has pushed their shop to design arrangements to be proud of and to reflect the years of experience in the business. From prom corsages to funeral sprays, this full-service, family-owned shop continues to put smiles on the community it loves.

A Shop That Stands Out

What sets this shop apart, according to Dyott, is the quality of the blooms and the drive for excellent customer service. Severna’s reputation is evident. Voted The Best of Severna Park three years in a row by the “Severna Park  Voice,” there is no doubt that this shop is beloved by its community.

Local Rocks!

Dyott loves being a local florist! Everyday he creates beauty that makes someone smile, he said. What he enjoys the most is the relationship he has with his customers. “They are customers that are part of the community and they become our friends,” Dyott said.

Severna Flowers and Gifts continues to bring smiles to everyone in the Severna Park community and their goal is to always go the extra mile. From “just because” to wedding flowers, Severna Flowers has it all!

Flower Spotlight: Craspedia Globosa

This month, we wanted to focus on a bloom that is not your “ordinary flower.” From fresh bouquets to long-lasting dry arrangements, this flower does it all! Learn more about craspedia globosa, the golden drumstick.

Origin & Symbolism

Craspedia globosa, most commonly known as “billy button” or “drumstick,” is a form of daisy that belongs to the Asteraceae family. Craspedia is a wildflower grown in Tasmania, New Zealand and Australia. The name derived from the Greek word “kraspedon,” which means “fringed edge,” globosa meaning “sperical shaped” in reference to the shape of the flower.

Billy buttons often signify good health, but in modern day it is said to “express the feeling that the receiver lights up the sender’s world.”

Availability

Drumsticks are available all year round! They are originally yellow, but some suppliers may offer dyed blooms in colors red, orange and green. The golden bloom can be mixed with succulents to create rustic bouquets with white daisies and wild flowers. They are also perfect as a little touch to brighten up a room!

Not too sure about this flower? Head to your local florist and ask for their ideas on how to incorporate this interesting bloom into an arrangement!

An icon of the holiday, a cornucopia filled with flowers and foliage is sure to be on many Thanksgiving tables come November 26. Autumn-hued saturn roses, pheasant feathers and myrtle will stand out in this arrangement.

Metallic Fall Elements

Give your table a little sparkle with gold accents like gold and silver vases for your arrangements and adding a bit of gold dust to your luxurious blooms.

A Fruitful Spread

While pumpkins will make their annual appearance at the Thanksgiving table, consider including a variety of fruits such as pears, apples and pomegranates, to give a more ‘bountiful’ look. Include a ‘just-picked’ arrangement with yellow daisies and wheat!

These Thanksgiving arrangements are perfect for anyone wanting to create a charming spread on their table. Call your favorite local florist before the holiday to secure your Thanksgiving florals!

November Card Messages

Flowers speak more than a thousand words, yet we still like that little note attached to an arrangement expressing the meaning behind the flowers. Here are some ideas of what to write to make any occasion extra special!

Thinking of You

The number of blooms symbolize the many times you’re on my mind. Thinking of you now and forever.

Thinking of you and wishing you the best of days.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for all the wonderful people in our lives. Here’s a big thank you for being a part of mine.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday where gratitude and joy fills the day. Happy Thanksgiving!

Bloom Trends: What The Kale?

Kale has become quite popular in the “Health and Wellness” world, but did you know that it is also a rising star in the flower world too? This yummy veggie is turning heads in flower arrangements and wedding bouquets! We talked to Debbie Green of The Cottage at Queen Creek in Queen Creek, Arizona to give us the details!

This pretty bloom, Green says, is so popular because it is a big focal flower. Unlike hydrangeas, who are difficult to work with, Kale holds up no matter what!

“It’s beautiful year round,” Green said. “It comes in a variety of colors like purple, white, and deep greens.”

Green says she always suggests Kale to her brides because of how versatile and easy it is to work with. “I always suggest it to them and once they see it, they are blown away that this veggie can look so beautiful!”

Don’t knock it until you see it! The hues of purple really make this flower pop and, hey, maybe you can have it as a snack after the wedding!
