Ask the Expert: I saw these flowers in TN and would like an ID
On vacation in the Smokies, we saw these in someone’s front yard. We’d like to have an I.D. if possible.

Terry,
This purple flower is known as Verbena. Verbena is a genus of about 250 species. Some are perennial and others are annuals. Of course where you live will also make a difference as to whether the flower is a perennial or an annual. I would say this is one of the Verbena x hybrida cultivars which are perennial in zones 9-15 (very southern part of the US). In Arkansas and in Tennessee, we grow this type of verbena as an annual. There are several cultivars which are great. If you want bunch and upright the romance series is fabulous. The Verbena in the picture looks a lot like the Babylon or Superbena series.
