August 11th, 2008 | By: Jamie Jamison Adams

Ask the Expert: What is the plant commonly known as monk's cowl?
I was given a cutting of a plant my friend called monk's cowl.
It has curled succulent leaves on long stems.
How do I care for it?  Brenda

  1. Jamie Jamison Adams Says:

    Brenda,

The term Monk's Cowl is not one I am familiar with, however the term Friar's Cowl is one that I am familiar with. Friar's Cowl is a plant that is botanically known as Arisarum vulgare. This plant is a tuberous perennial and considered a succulent. Take a look at this page which has a picture of Arisarum vulgare. Does you plant or the parent plant look anything like the photo? If not a picture of the mother plant or even your cutting could help me identify the plant.

If you have Arisarum vulgare plant it in humus rich soil and place in birght light. It is important to keep it in moist yet well-drained soil except during the summer when it can be kept drier. This plant is hardy only in zones 8-9. So in other zone it must be kept indoors during the winter months.
