  1. Marie,

First peace lilies are notorious for going into transplant shock. So I imagine that is where the pissed off comes from; but how you transplanted them may also be part of the problem. The soil could be an issue. Although Miracle Gro soil is an ok product, it is important to get a soil that matches the needs of the plant. So depending on which Miracle Gro soil you used it could be too heavy and retaining more moisture than the peace lily is accustomed to. Also you might have damaged the roots when dividing them. I always separate my plants from the bottom up. Why? Because I have better control on the amount of roots for each section. I have seen it many times, the person dividing the plant concentrates on the green growth and doesn’t get enough roots to support the plant. The other problem I see is planting too deep. Even though you divide the plant it should not be planted any deeper than it was originally.

Now what can you do to help these plants. First apologize to your boss. Just kidding.
Check the level of your plants. If they are planted to deep raise them. Second check your soil. Is it extremely wet? Make sure the pot is draining properly. If the soil is extremely wet let it dry slightly before watering. Most people want to fertilize a plant that is in stress. Please resist the temptation. The plant needs to come out of it’s funk first. Now it is all about wait and see.

Try not to love your peace lilies to death. Have you ever noticed who dogs and kids go to? The person who ignores them. Plants are a lot like dogs and kids, they only perform well if you act like you don’t care. If you ignore your peace lily and quit pampering it, you will have better success. Please don’t be discouraged. Everyone has had an experience like this; learned from it and gone on to successful plant growing.

Remember you can always buy a peace lily and pretend the whole thing never happened.

  2. Dear Jamie-

Thank you for the encouragement, and i have actually considered just buying another one for my boss…and he’s doing exactly what you’ve stated, “ignoring” the plants…thank you for all your help and your understanding.

    peace,
    marie

  3. Barbara,

Poinsettia are a little tricky so don’t feel bad if you have trouble caring for them. Water, humidity and light all have the ability to affect the poinsettia in either a negative or positive way. In fact, poinsettias will stay green if the plant doesn’t receive the right amount of light to encourage bract proper growth and coloring. Pinching the poinsettia is the only way to keep the plant from getting leggy. You might want to read Caring for Poinsettias which has care instructions and pinching instructions. Hopefully once you’ve read the Poinsettia newsletter, you will be able to care for the plant properly. Good Luck.

My office has plants all left from the different marriages of my boss. We have peace lilies from Wanda, poinsettas from Faye and cactus from Sonya. I have total control of their care. But I think I would lose my job if any of them died.

I have no problem with the cactus, the peace lilies I think I have figured out, but the poinsettas are large and look like weeds with no color except green. The leaves turn yellow and fall off. These are the oldest plants. Help!!!

Maybe suggest his next wife be a florist. I would buy a small new plant and place it in the pot when no one is looking so at least you can “rescue” one small new plant should the rest not make it.
