Flower Spotlight: Tulips

Tulips are so unique because they come in a variety of colors, shapes, and flower forms. These flowers range from early, mid, to late season blooms so you can enjoy their beauty from March to May. Here are some fun facts and a brief history about this elegant bloom.

Origins & Symbolism
The tulip is a member of the lily family which is made up of 100 species. Tulips grow over a great territory in Asia Minor through Siberia to China. Turkish growers first cultivated tulips around 1,000 A.D. Tulips symbolize imagination, fame, and perfect love.

Did you know?
Tulips are actually edible. The Netherlands suffered a great famine during World War 2 when allied forces failed to liberate the northern provinces of the country. The northern provinces became isolated from the liberated parts of Europe resulting in a food shortage. Old, dry tulip bulbs were sold in grocery stores and newspapers published recipes with tulips. The tulip bulbs were relatively easy to cook and very nutritious.

There are many different tulip festivals around the world. Albany New York has one of the largest tulip festivals with over 100,000 tulips in bloom. Albany’s highly anticipated spring tradition will celebrate its Dutch heritage through music performances, a Royal Tulip Ball, fine arts exhibits, and festival luncheons.

Availability
Tulips are available from December to May with the main supply between January and April. These elegant flowers come in a variety of colors like red, white, cream, pink, purple, black, yellow and several others.
