Lucky Bamboo and Stagnate Water

By: Jamie Jamison Adams

Ask the Expert: Lucky Bamboo Plants

Roots were coming out of small container.  I moved the plant into next size.  Filled with black river rocks and pebbles as suggested.  Leaves are now turning a little yellow at the bottom.  I am using distilled water but within 2 days, the water on the rocks is stagnate, slippery, and has a smell.

Please Help!

    Esther,

Your stagnate water maybe a result of algae. This occurs usually in clear containers, because the light hits the water causing algae to form. Opaque containers will help with this problem some what.

The first thing you need to do is clean everything. Wash the container, rocks and the stalks. Then fill the container with the rocks and distilled water followed by the lucky bamboo stalks. If you are using a clear glass container keep it from bright light — algae must have light to form. This should take care of your problem.
