Lucky Bamboo Growing Extra Roots

Ask The Plant Expert:

Hi, My lucky bamboo (dracaena sanderiana) stalks started growing roots in the middle of the stems (nodes) where leaves have grown. This is the first time I have encountered this. Would like to know why this happens, and what should I do. I suspect it’s not getting any water and thus the leaves are yellowing…

Thanks in advance for your help! – Meng

Lucky Bamboo Developing Side Roots

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply: Meng,

Wow. I have never seen this before and am at a loss as to why it occurred. I know some tropical plants that live in humid environments will form aerial roots. Maybe this is what is happening to your lucky bamboo.

I would cut it off where the roots have started and place in water to start a new stalk. Sorry that I couldn’t be more help.

Perhaps one of our readers can help?

Hi i had exactly the same thing happen to my lucky bamboo! The stalk suddenly started turning yellow, and then i decided it was lost, so i cut the green shoot off to try and save it, and when i peeled the yellow leaves off the stem there were red roots growing underneath!

Must be how the plants reproduce naturally.

Colored glass and marbles are fine to use, just make sure you wash them well with hot, soapy water before putting them in your container.
