Lucky Bamboo Yellow From The Bottom Up

June 25th, 2008 | By: Jamie Jamison Adams

Ask the Expert: I have a Bamboo plant and the main stem is turning yellow from the bottom up. It is kept in a powder room with just the light of the lights in the room. About an inch or so of water. What could be the problem?? And can it be saved?  Wendy

    Wendy,

Usually there is one thing that causes lucky bamboo stalks to turn yellow from the bottom up: too much fertilizer. Unfortunately once this has occurred there is no much that can be done to reverse the process. Change your water and don't feed it. There is a mall chance that the stalk will recover. This usually only happen when the stalk is just starting to turn yellow. If the stalk is soft and yellow you need to eliminate it from the container since it will not recover. You can create a new plant if the top is still green and the stalk is yellow. You will need to cut the top off and root it. Read our tips on how to propagate lucky bamboo. It will also give you information on the light requirements.
