Can Lucky Bamboo Go From Yellow To Green?

Ask the Expert: About my lucky bamboo
If the thick stem of my lucky bamboo has turned yellow is there any way to get it green again?  The plant is about 2 1/2 feet in height.  Thanks you. Patsy

Plant Expert Reply:

Once a lucky bamboo stalk turns yellow it will not turn back to green. If the stalk is staying firm, you can leave it be.  However, I usually remove the yellowing stalks from a container holding healthy green stalks.  You can propagate new stalks from the yellow one if it still has green parts.  Our blog post We are not always lucky with lucky bamboo details the process of propagating lucky bamboo.

  1. Can the leaves change from yellow back to green? or should i remove them from the plant?

  2. Only if they are slightly yellow.

  3. can they turn back green when they are not all yellow!

  4. Kimberly,
Depending on the reason as to why your bamboo is turning yellow, yes it can go back to green. Yellow is a sign that the bamboo is unhealthy. Once the reason is rectified, it will go back to green.

  5. If the soil is still wet with chlorine water should I add bottled water to it, should I change the soil, or should I wait until the soil is dry before adding bottled water?

  6. Jamie Woods says:

I would start using bottled or distilled water to flush the chlorine out of the soil, but don’t overwater your plant.

  7. What do i do with my lucky bamboo plant if the entire plant is yellow except the tips. They are a bright green?

  8. Jamie Woods says:

You will want to cut the parts off that are still green to start new stalks. The yellow parts can’t be saved.

  9. Rayormy says:

I over fed my bamboo with fertilizer when it was really thirsty and the plan turned yellow. I read that it will take a few months to turn green again, is this true if I have changed the soil and don’t give it any fertilizer for a while?

  10. Jamie Woods says:

Just keep a close eye on your stalks. If they start to get mushy, you will want to remove them asap.

  11. The temperature in the house dropped to 59 degrees F last night. I woke up to see parts of my three year old plant turning yellow. I’ve been misting it and increased the temperature in the house. Can the plant recover from the cold shock last night or should I cut off the yellow parts to save the one green sprout left. It has turned yellow at the beginning of two of the three sprouts coming off the main stock but is not on the main stock. Please let me know any advice.

    Hi Kim,
It might be best to cut off the yellow parts in order to preserve the rest of your bamboo. You can read more about helping preserve your bamboo from continued yellowing in this other blog we have here: https://www.flowershopnetwork.com/blog/we-are-not-always-lucky-with-lucky-bamboo/

  13. My bamboo stalks are yellow near the bottom, regular city water was the cause of the yellowing I guess. I have since only used rain water and all the upper 2/3 of the plants stalks and leaves are green. All six plants are about 1/1/2 feet tall in rocks and water. Is there anything I can do or just leave it ? Please let me know any advice.

  14. Jeffrey Balch says:

Once a lucky bamboo stalk turns yellow, it will never turn green again. f the stalk is staying firm, I would suggest leaving it. If it is not firm, you’ll need to propagate. Read more about that here: https://www.flowershopnetwork.com/blog/we-are-not-always-lucky-with-lucky-bamboo/
