Karla,

Do you know if the leaves on this plant turn red when the temperature is cold or if it gets red berries? If it does it could be a Nandina domestica sometimes referred to as Heavenly Bamboo.
Take a look at this <a href="http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.arhomeandgarden.org/images/plantoftheweek/heavenly_bamboo.JPG&imgrefurl=http://www.arhomeandgarden.org/plantoftheweek/articles/Heavenly_Bamboo.htm&h=200&w=173&sz=22&tbnid=Qo1N1zuRm6GuaM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=90&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dheavenly%2Bbamboo%2Bphoto%26um%3D1&start=3&ei=buNOR_vlG5SEiAHtkrWVCA&sig2=n-Vf3WLV7ulwpDB5Wl9-bA&sa=X&oi=images&ct=image&cd=3" rel="nofollow">Heavenly Bamboo</a> picture from the University of Arkansas.
