Snap, Crackle, and California Poppy

September 3rd, 2008

It may not be the sound of music that drives florists in California to create fabulous California poppy inspired designs, but it is definitely the appearance of a drop of golden sun that has helped the California poppy (Eschsholzia californica) become the state flower and a celebrated symbol of life in The Golden State. Adopted officially in 1903, the California poppy stands proudly with pop and zing as the California state flower. Californians celebrate the amazing flower with an annual Poppy Day each April but that’s not all.

The vibrant colors of the California poppy make it a perfect Read the rest of this entry »

Important Tips for Arranging Flowers at Home

September 2nd, 2008

Start with a clean vase:

One of the first mistakes people make when they arrange their flowers at home is to start the process with a dirty vase. If you haven’t cleaned the vase from the last time there were flowers in it, there could be bacteria or fungi in the vase that will cause your flowers to go down early.

A clean vase from your cupboard could also be a source of house dust. We all know that house dust contains all things that could be harmful to you, which are also potentially Read the rest of this entry »

Somewhere Over The Rainbow of Blooms Lies Your Next Gift Idea

September 1st, 2008

I won’t deny it. I’m a huge fan of color in the things that surround me. Deep reds, bright blues, the shades of green that inspire me to shout, “Catch me lucky charms!” and nearly every vivid color in the rainbow thrills me to the core. Upon reflection, it’s probably this giddy effect that makes me love the “Rainbow of Blooms” arrangement almost to animated glee. Almost. Read the rest of this entry »

Mark September With An Aster-isk

August 29th, 2008

My mother is a Virgo. I married a Virgo. Oddly enough, their birthday is the same day. Suffice it to say that gift giving in the Jackson family becomes very difficult around September 15th. I’m quite taken with birth month flowers as unique birthday gifts because it blends the traditional with the creative. This is a very endearing quality after three years of finding a unique gift for a man and a charming birthday gift for a mother all on the same day!

My fellow is fairly easy to please when gift giving is involved. His birthday is a fairly major occasion but finding a way to make him feel completely special on that day is difficult when we also celebrate Mom’s birthday on that day. Not this year! Read the rest of this entry »

Need Ideas For Decorating With Fresh Flowers?

August 26th, 2008

Throwing a dinner party for a “girl’s night out” treat? Why not spice up the decorations around the dinner table with some fresh flowers from your local florist. There are always tons of flowers from which to choose. Besides, what girl doesn’t like to stop and smell the freshly cut bouquet of roses in the antique vase from your great grandmother? (I’m pretty sure the standard cliche phrase was adapted from that sentence. Really.)

There are many ways that a florist can help you throw a party in style whether it’s a formal affair or a pajama party. For example, Read the rest of this entry »
