Plam-like Tree With “Artichoke Fruit” & Spikey Fronds - What Is It?

By: Jamie Jamison Adams

Ask the Expert: Was i bitten by a tree?

A palm-looking tree (with “fruit” that looks like artichokes) brushed its spikey frond on my bare shoulder. Immediately, it began to itch & welt. I later notice super-tiny splinters embedded into my skin where the spikes had touched. What is this? need more info on this strange tree… MM

    MM,

I am completely perplexed by this question. What has really confused me is the “artichoke fruit” on a palm-like tree. Is there any way you could send me a picture? You can email it to jadams@flowershopnetwork.com.

Globe Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) plants are in the milk thistle family and can has spines on the leaves. It can look somewhat like a palm.

I am unable to get a photo as I was on location for a out of town photo shoot. sorry :(

Thank you for your reply & info. Unfortunately, I am unable to send a photo as I was on location for a photo shoot. I did look up the Globe Artichoke, however that isn’t the kind of tree. It looked like a tall palm tree. And the fruit looked like swollen, brown artichoke.

Can you tell me where - like what state? Location can help me narrow down the suspects.
