Help! How Do I Revive My Peace Lily?

Spathiphyllum clevelandii - Peace LilyAsk the Plant Expert: I bought it a month ago at Home Depot. After returning from Sweden.  I have it in my basement by a window, but it is pretty low of light.  I guess I didn’t water it enough and now the leaves have wilted; a couple are yellow.  The two flowers I had are brown.  How can I revive this plant?  It is still green is that a good sign??? – Gloria

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply: You can try. First remove any dead or drying leaves and blooms. If the soil is dry, saturate it, and make sure any excess water can drain away from the plant.  Monitor the plant; give it water when the soil begins to dry out. In a week or so, you should see the sign of new growth.

Hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you need anything else.

I have a peace lily. It’s pretty good sized. I havebit potted in one of those pots that have the watering hole along the bottom. Although the plant is still doing fairly well, I think I totally over watered it! The soil is very damp. I’ve cut back on watering it, but not sure if that’s the right thing to do??? I don’t want to lose it( it’s my baby :). ). What should I do?? The tips of the leaves are brown but they have been for awhile. Should I stop watering it completely until the soil drys out? Should I try re-potting it???

  2. Jamie Woods says:

    Peggy,
Allow the soil to dry out before you begin watering it again. Once you’ve done this, get it back on a regular watering schedule, and your plant should be good!

MY PEACE LILY THAT I HAVE FOR 27 YEARS WAS FROZEN 2 WEEKS AGO . WE DON’T HAVE ELECTRICITY FOR 10 DAYS. WE LIVE IN PENNSYLVANIA. WILL THEY GROW AGAIN. I CALL HER MY MOTHER FOR MY REMEMBRANCE FOR HER .

  4. Ann-Marie RENAUD says:

I have a peace lily that either got over watered or got a cold draft it is so wilted and I am sad, I don’t know what to do???? Please help me

  5. Jamie Woods says:

If you think it was from a cold draft, move it to a different location away from any air vents or doors. If it is from over watering, there isn’t much to be done except allowing the plant to dry out. Peace lilies are pretty tough, so with the correct conditions, it may recover. 6. Jamie Woods says:

    Evelyn,
Peace lilies are pretty resilient, so there is a chance they will come back.

  7. Misty Dawn says:

My Peace Lily has brown tips, should I remove those leaves or cut the brown piece off??? I need ur help plz & thank u

  8. Jamie Woods says:

Cut the brown tips off at a 45-degree angle.

  9. Kelly greene says:

I’m hoping someone can help me. Some friends bought me a peace lily when my father passed away almost 2 years ago. I’m terrible at keeping plants. This one is very sentimental to me. It is so droopy and wilted all of a sudden. I repotted it, checked the roots. Everything seems good to me. There is new growth coming from the roots. But all the leaves are hanging over the side of the pot. Literally laying on the counter. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  10. Jamie Woods says:

    Kelly,
All plants experience some degree of shock when transplanted, so some drooping isn’t too unusual. Without seeing the plant, it sounds like it is suffering from underwatering. Peace lilies like an evenly moist soil and the top should barely dry between waterings.

  11. Kelly greene says:

I would post a picture but I dont see how. I will try watering it more to see if that helps. Thank you!

  13. Teresa McNeal says:

Kelly please help me my peace Lilly is dying It was from my mother’s funeral and it means a lot to me I reported it and I spray the leaves every day I put it in a more shady. Area all the leaves has died off except maybe a few I don’t know what to do to revive it can you please help me.

  14. Jamie Woods says:

    Teresa,
Repotting your lily will cause it to experience some shock, and may make it appear wilted for a few weeks. Place it in bright, indirect light, and keep the soil evenly moist. Peace lilies are pretty resilient. Give it some time to recover, and I think it will be okay.

  15. Miss Denise says:

    Gday
My peace Lily is drooping and wilting bad as a result of a water bottle spilling on the leaves after I watered it.
All the leaves and the flower are pointing to the floor
I took it out of the pot let it sit on newspaper to dry out
Then unfortunately the next day I left it by a light went to work forgot all about it
It’s my favorite plant help please

Can I save it has much new growth??

  16. Jamie Woods says:

    Denise,
The best thing for you to do at this point is repot your peace lily, get it on a consistent watering schedule, and give it some time. It has experienced quite a bit of trauma in a short amount of time, so it’ll take it a little bit for the shock to wear off, but I am confident that it can make a full recovery. Good luck!

  17. Jenna Dewey says:

Hi Jamie! I appreciate all of your comments and suggestions. I also am having trouble with my peace lily. I have had my peace lily for over two years and had a beautiful rhythm with helping her thrive. I was gone traveling for a month and returned 2.5 weeks ago to find her totally wilted! It is a large and flowering peace lily, but the pot is large enough for the roots. I tried getting back to my watering schedule but she is still as droopy as ever. I also tried fertilizing and checking the roots (unpotting, mixing in “fresh” soil), but there was no issue. I’ve been watering her consistently — too much so! Found some soft white fuzz on the stop of the soil which I removed. However, she is still droopy — stems are totally horizontal and leaves are touching the floor. It it possible the plant is just too heavy and too large for itself? Do I need to split the plant? I appreciate your help!

    Best,

    Jenna

  18. Jamie Woods says:

    Jenna,
It might take a little while for your peace lily to come back. Don’t try to over water it. That will only cause more problems. Continue to water it like you normally would and give it time.

  19. hello
all that’s left of my peace lily is pretty much the root system. The stems and leaves turned brown and had to be cut off, not really sure what happened. will my Lily regrow or should I just call it quits and get a new one?

  20. Jamie Woods says:

    Faun,
If the roots are still healthy, your plant may come back. Give it a couple of weeks and watch for new growth.

  21. I have a peace lily for 39 years. It’ stopped absorbing water and all the leaves have wilted. I cleaned out the large pot and put new miracle grow indoor potting soil and transplanted the plant. How long will it take to see whether this works? Or if it’s a lost cause. I am so sad, this plant was given to me when my son was born 39 years ago. So, it has a sentimental value to me.

  22. Aynsley Broom says:

    Hi Linda,
If you have transplanted your peace lily, it will take some time. If you would like more information, we have a great article about peace lilies that are in distress here: https://www.flowershopnetwork.com/blog/peace-lily-in-shock-what-to-do/

  23. My toddler has just about ripped all of the leaves off of the stems of my 2 peace lilies that I received from my dads funeral. I put them in my bathroom (keeping the door closed) in indirect bright light and keep the soil evenly watered. One looks like it will make it…it still has dark green color to it. The other is pretty thinned out, lighter green color with some yellow areas. Is there anything I can give them to give them a little boost?

  24. Katie Clements says:

I got a peace lilly from my fathers funeral 2 months ago it has just recently starting to droop towards the ground It came in a gorgeous pot so I didnt change it from what it came in from the florist should I change it ? I dont want to lose it:(

  25. Aynsley Broom says:

    Hi Whitney,
You might try to lightly fertilize it, but it doesn’t like a lot of fertilizer. It might be in shock so you’ll want to give it some time.

  26. Jeffrey Balch says:

I would recommend making sure that your peace lily is receiving enough water! You want to make sure the root ball is getting plenty of water. However, you don’t want to let it sit in water, or else it could induce root rot and attract pests. If the pot it is currently in does not have a drainage hole, I would suggest repotting your plant.

  27. I have 2 peace lillies that are pretty old, they were in the original pots and jammed. I recently divided the 2 plants into 5 plants and repotted in Miraclegro garden soil instead of potting soil. The plants are droopy and don’t look happy at all. Should I report them in potting soil or do you think they will be ok in the garden soil?

  28. Dani James says:

Any time a peace lily is replant it will go through transplant shock. Which is most likely what is happening. However, there are a few things to check. 1) make sure that you did not plant the plant too deep. The top of the original root ball should be still the top with no extra soil added. 2) make sure the new container has drain holes and that the plant is not too soggy or too dry. Then give the plant a few weeks to recover.

  29. Neelanjana Markan says:

I bought a peace lily for my room last winter and had kept it in my room. It was doing pretty well initially. My room doesn’t have any sources for sunlight to seep in, so I used to keep it out in the balcony for a while once a week. However, this was before the summer hit full on. About 2 months ago, I repotted the plant in a bigger pot since the plant overgrew the previous one. It took repotting really well. However, after a while I noticed that the leaves started turning black from the tip to the top. I got worried and started reading about what could be the reason. There are generally 2 reasons highlighted for black leaves. Overwatering and Underwatering. I went wrong with neither of that. Then I read that keeping it in a room with AC could be the reason. So I moved it to another room that doesn’t have AC and have kept it in a corner that receives partial sunlight. I feel am doing everything right from trimming leaves, turning soil, watering adequately. But the leaves are still turning black. Even the new growth is turning black. I feel so sad looking at my plant. What should I do to save my plant?

  30. Dani James says:

There are 3 things that can cause peace lilies to turn black. The first is a water issue – too much or too little. With water, the leaves turn brown first then black. The second is exposure to an extreme temperature change. Exposure to extreme cold will turn the peace lily leaves black. Exposure to extreme heat or sunlight usually causes a yellow/brownish discoloration before it becomes black. The third is a fungus called Phytophthora (aerial blight). With this fungus you need to keep water off the foliage – that is how the fungus spreads. You may need to treat both the soil and the foliage with a fungicide. Check with your local nursery & garden center for the appropriate fungicide.

  31. I over watered my peace lily to the point all the leaves were dropping to the floor. I reported it with new soil after making sure all old soil was off to the roots. I cut all the brown leaves off and left nothing but the green stems. It’s been three months and the only thing it’s done was stand the stems upward. Need help please it’s from my uncles funeral 😞

  32. Hi Rita! Since each bloom has it’s own stem, you’ll have to remove both the bloom and the green stem. You’ll want to remove the green stem as close to the base of the plant as possible. This will help stimulate the plant to produce more blooms. You can find more here. Hope that helps!
