Roses Reign Supreme

For as long as history has been recorded, roses have always reigned supreme. Their undeniable beauty is evident, but why are roses so highly regarded over other blooms?

According to fossil evidence the rose is over 35 million years old! This ancient flower was grown for thousands of years throughout Asia before ever seeing the Western World. The beautiful bloom frequently appears in poems, art, music, literature, and even ancient religious documents. The symbolic history of the rose is what has kept this star alive.

The Story of the Rose

The story begins with the symbolic history of the rose. In ancient Greek mythology there is a tale about the beginning of the rose. Chloris, goddess of flowers and springtime was out walking when she stumbled upon the lifeless body of a woodland nymph. Chloris was saddened by the fate of the innocent life and decided to transform the body into a flower. She called upon Aphrodite to add beauty, and Dionysus to add a nectar of intoxicating aroma. Charm, joy and splendor were also added from the three Graces. It was the most spectacular of all the flowers and was named, “Queen of the Flowers.” Aphrodite named the flower Rose, dedicating it to her son, Eros, the god of love.

The significance of the rose was very important to the Romans. Cleopatra even had her quarters filled with rose petals so Marc Antony would remember her beautiful smell.

“Roman high society women used petals much like currency believing that they could banish wrinkles if used in poultices. Rose petals were often dropped in wine because it was thought that the essence of rose would stave off drunkenness and victorious armies would return to be showered with rose petals from the civilians that crowded the balconies above the streets,” states the Flower Expert.

Today the rose is known for beauty, love, desire and admiration. The classic red rose has withstood the test of time and is still the most popular bloom around the world. Whether it’s one single flower or a grand bouquet, the famous flower has great meaning.

Surprise a loved one with a beautiful arrangement filled with the most popular flower in the world!
