Sticky Yellow Leaves on a Lucky Bamboo

December 14th, 2007 | By: Jamie Jamison Adams

Ask the Expert: Lucky bamboo has yellow and sticky leaves

Hi, Ive had my bamboo for 4 years, it has always been in the same place and pot. It is very tall and now the branches are turning soft and wabbly and a few yellow leaves. Under the leaves there is a sticky substance. Cleaned it with wet towel but came back. Spray with indoor plant bug killer, stopped overall yellow but still on tip of leaves and still wabbly. Moved closer to window still nothing. What could it be? Stickyness still there

  1. Jamie Jamison Adams Says:

    Ana,

Yellow leaves are the result of too much light or fertilizer. Sticky substances are usually the result of insects. Cleaning the stalks and changing the water is also a good practice in these cases. When you say the stalks are wobbly and soft, I assume this is from the bottom up. If this is the case then over-fertilization has probably occurred and cause unrepairable damage. My suggestion would be to cut off the stalks above the soft wabbly section and root the tops. Clean your container and fill with distilled water before you place the tops back in the container. I would use a rooting hormone on the cut.
