Cinco de Mayo, meaning “the 5th of May” in Spanish, is celebrated each year on, you guessed it, May 5th. This date commemorates the impressive Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. In recent history, the holiday has grown in popularity tremendously in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. All over the country, people come together to throw fiestas and sing the praises of a colorful culture.

Tiptoe Through Tulips This April

April already? The weather is just turning warm and the urge to get outside in the fresh air is becoming too strong to resist. The Latin name Aprilis is considered to come from the verb aperire meaning, “to open,” in allusion to its being the season when trees and flowers begin to “open.”
After a chilly winter with bare trees and the absence of flowers, it’s easy to see why spring is many people’s most favorite season. Tulips, irises, daffodils, hyacinths and all other flowers of spring are poking their brightly colored heads out for all to see. (April is also National Gardening Month.)

FSN Booth Flowers at the Arkansas Florist Convention

Aren’t these flowers beautiful? When FSN has a booth at a florist convention or show, we always order display flowers from a local florist in the area. This arrangement was for the 2012 Arkansas State Florist Convention‘s Diamond Jubilee by Terry Bates of The Arrangement in Hot Springs AR. The white and silver arrangement is filled with subtle details that hint at the show’s theme — diamonds!
Can you spot the diamonds inside these calla lilies? Absolutely beautiful details.

Local Florist’s Quick Tips For DIY Flower Arranging

We just found this great video from back in 2007 that features one of our member florists and thought I’d share! Meghan Carter, host of Ask the Decorator visits with Vickey Wenshrup of Amelia Florist Wine & Gift Shop in Amelia, Ohio to learn a few DIY flower arranging pointers.

At the beginning of the video, Meghan asks, “How hard can it really be to make a floral arrangement?” By the end, she adds, “flower arranging isn’t as easy and you would think!” There is a whole lot more that goes into flower arranging that just putting flowers into a vase. Florists are truly artists, but also have to be meticulous in their efforts to keep your flowers lasting as long as possible. Sure you can DIY a flower arrangement, but for the absolute best results, give your local florist a call!
If you’re interested in DIY flowers, keep an eye out for workshops available in your area. Florists all over the country offer flower arranging classes where you can learn the ins and outs of creating flowers.
