Why is heart-shaped lucky bamboo stalk turning yellow?

By: Jamie Jamison Adams

Ask the Expert: I have a lucky bamboo plant that 2 stalks are shaped like a heart. One of the stalks has turned completely yellow, however, there are healthy leaves steming from it. What should I do?? How often should the water be changed?? Please contact me and give me your advice. Thank you — Jean

  1. Jamie Jamison Adams Says:

    Jean,

Yellow stalks (if yellow from the bottom up) are usually a result of too much light or fertilizer. Depending on the stage of decline there is little you can do. If the lucky bamboo stalk is just beginning to turn yellow change the water (using distilled water) and move to a place with a little less light. The bottom of the stalk can be cut off and the top rooted or the yellowing stalk removed completely. However, since yours is formed into a shape I don’t think this is an option. Change the water every couple of weeks using distilled water.
