Why Is My Gerbera Plant Sick?

April 5th, 2007 | By: Jamie Jamison Adams

What is wrong with my Gerbera?
It sits on my desk and gets fluorescent lighting only. It was full of blooms only a few weeks ago. Can you help me? Here are some pictures of the plant.

  1. Jamie Jamison Adams Says:

    Tracy,

Your Gerbera is suffering from two fronts. The first is insufficient light. Gerbera's require bright light and fluorescent light is not enough. If you could place it in a window or even outside where it could get more light, it will thrive. If you place it outside make sure the temperatures are not below 35 degrees. The second problem is water. Too much, too little … I'm not sure. Water stress will demonstrate itself the same way for over-watering as it will for under-watering. It is important to keep it evenly moist. Indoors I recommend watering when the soil is heading toward the dry side. Bouncing from too wet to too dry will compromise the plant. A good test is to pinch the soil and roll into a ball …. if you can squeeze water from the ball – too wet ….. if you can't make a ball because the soil is powdery – too dry …. soil easily rolled into a ball but can't squeeze water from it – perfect. Hope this helps
