What Should I Do About Yellow Leaves On Peace Lily?

Ask the Expert: Peace Lily care
I purchased a peace lily about 4 weeks ago for my office. It is not in direct sunlight, I have been watering it regularly to keep the soil moist, and spray the leaves. However, the leaves are CONSTANTLY turning yellow. Everyday there are new yellow leaves appearing. Any suggestions? How often should I be watering the plant. Lisa

I believe your plant is receiving too much water.  Peace lilies generally get by with once a week watering.  If they are in a climate that is cooler or has low light levels, the peace lily (Spathiphyllum) can go even longer between watering.  The first thing to check is drainage.  Make sure your container allows the plant to drain off excess water. Once the water issue is corrected it will take a couple of weeks for the plant to fully recover.  The first sign of recovery will be new green leaves.    Good luck and keep me posted.

  1. Hello I have an oriental lily that’s doing the same, I also water daily but not too much. Am I overwatering?

  2. Hello again,

I was signed up here but my question has gone! Nooo lol

Anyhow i bought an oriental Lily 6 days ago from a supermarket. Since being home it has developed yellowing lower leaves which fall off very easily. I have looked and looked into this online however some info conflicts so i am concerned of introducing an issue by trying to solve one. This is also the first house plant i have purchased and planned on making it a hobby so i don’t want to kill the first one off!

Since having it home i have placed it on my window ledge, windows slightly open as always, good strong but slightly dappled sunlight in the mornings then getting more shaded as the sun gets hotter in the afternoon, the pot or leaves do not get hot, i have watered it daily but from the bottom, allowing it to drink what it wants then taking the rest away for drainage, but yesterday as for the first time it was dry at the top so i watered from the top until running from the bottom.

The environment is quite different from the store i got it from so it could be that however it seems to be in an environment now that it should be happy with around 22/24c in the afternoon but not always, or a watering issue? A few, not many roots are escaping the pot at the bottom.

    Thanks, Alex

    Alex,
Part of what is going on with your lily is the shock of being in a new home. You may also be overwatering. You should water thoroughly when the surface soil is just beginning to feel dry and water from the top until the water runs out of the drainage holes and allow it to drain off. You don’t want to let the pot sit in a saucer of water. Once your lily has time to adapt to its new home and you get it on a consistent watering schedule, I think it will be fine.

  4. Hey Jamie,

Ok thanks i will adopt the watering style and try to leave it alone, thanks Jamie!!
