Lisa,
You have a Bougainvillea probably a cultivar called 'Royal Purple' or 'Elizabeth Angus'. Bougainvillea are wonderful plants we grow several of them every year for sale at our garden center. The plant grows wild in places warm like Florida. In zone 8 and cooler the plants are usually grown in containers so that they can be moved to warm indoor locations during the winter.
The plant care for bougainvilleas is fairly simple. Place it where it will get a minimum of 5 hours sun a day any less and it won't bloom. The more sun the better. Keep it moist but not soggy, drainage is essential. Bougainvillea love heat and humidity. During the growing season fertilize you bougainvillea often and during the dormant season once a month. You can prune bougainvillea at any time they bloom on new growth. I usually make my cut on the stem right in front of a leaf and at an angle. That is pretty much all you have to do to keep your bougainvillea healthy. Oh and they like to be crowded in their container.
