FSN's Bloomin' Newsletter for October
OCTOBER IS A BIG MONTH FOR HOLIDAYS!
Sure, the big October holiday is Halloween, but there are numerous other small holidays that deserve just as much attention! Did you know there were two other great holidays that just happen to be on the same day? Bosses Day and Sweetest Day are coming up fast!
Perhaps the 2nd-most anticipated holiday (Christmas is first, of course), Halloween is the time of the year to be something you're not. Who doesn't want to have a day to not be yourself? Plus coming up with your costume is the best part of the year!
Bosses Day is a great way to say a big thank you to your boss. (Hopefully you've got a good one!) This year, Bosses Day will fall on a Saturday, many employees are choosing to send their Bosses Day gifts on Friday instead. Check around your office to see if your co-workers are planning something special for your boss on Friday.
Sweetest Day is a fun holiday to show appreciation to those in your life who typically get overlooked. By sending Sweetest Day gifts, you can make someone's day so much sweeter and feel great knowing they truly deserved it.
Keep reading for more great ideas for all of these holidays and more!
FSN's Favorite Flower Arrangement For October
This month's favorite flower arrangement was an easy choice for me. Our new Halloween design, Hocus Pocus has been my favorite ever since it was created! The color palette used in this is such a stark contrast to the normal orange and black we usually associate with Halloween.
The bright green and dark purples mixed with the painted black pumpkins definitely remind me of a ghoulishly-grand witch. This floral design would make THE PERFECT hostess gift for any Halloween party.
I don't know about you, but my guy's big into football. NFL, College… even the world of fantasy football has taken him over.
Sending a man flowers is almost taboo for some guys, but sending a man football-themed flowers… suddenly he's the hit of the office! Don't ask me why, but there is a certain passion a man reserves for his team.
So, for wives looking to send a little something special to their hubby's office, football-themed flowers are an obvious choice! Not only will they loveee the idea, but will show it off to all of their friends and co-workers.
Today Flower Shop Network participated in Arkansas' first ever Go Pink For The Cure Day. In September, Governor Mike Beebe declared October 1st to be Go Pink For The Cure Day to raise awareness for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. He urged all citizens to 'go pink' to raise awareness in their business, school, religious or social group. This day will surely do great things for creating awareness of the importance of mammography and remove barriers that prevent women from seeking mammograms.
They asked us to go pink and that is just what we did! At FSN, we have been personally affected by the horrible disease. Not only do many of us have friends and family members who have succumbed to breast cancer, but one of our very own teammates fell victim not long ago. However, not all stories here are sad. We have 2 PROUD survivors!
National Boss's Day — a holiday set aside to pay tribute to the awesome supervisors who make our day-to-day lives a little more bearable. (Hopefully, you all have great bosses too!) Your boss, for better or worse, deserves at least one day of recognition. This year, feel free to express a little gratitude and send a little token of your appreciation. National Boss's Day 2010 is October 16th, so you have plenty of time to find the perfect gift!
SWEETS FOR YOUR SWEET ON SWEETEST DAY! (Coming up Oct 16th!)
Sweetest Day is the day to reward those around us who make our lives a little sweeter. Our moms, dads and grandparents all have specific days for attention, but Sweetest Day was created to show our appreciation to the people in our life who often go unrecognized. It can be the person in the office who makes the (good) coffee in the morning, or your dog groomer who goes the extra mile to make your pup look spectacular. So, on Sweetest Day, October 16th, it's your turn to return the favor.
Ask the Expert:My daughter is getting married May 7th, 2011. She wants to use Blue Orchids in her floral arrangements, her colors are Navy Blue, White and a touch of silver. (Winter in May) What other flowers could you suggest for the bridal bouquet and bridesmaids bouquets? Thanks for your help! Shelly
Our Expert's Answer:
I personally don't know of a naturally occurring blue orchid. The most commonly used 'blue orchid' is the blue Dendrobium, however it is actually a Purple Bombay Dendrobium dyed blue. This flower is more of a purplish-blue color rather than your desired navy. (See picture to the left.) I've also seen Misteen Dendrobium dyed blue. This flower is a white orchid with light-pink tipped petals; when dyed blue, it still has hints of purple.
Florists also have the option to use a special floral spray paint and can make your flowers the perfect color for you! This is definitely best left to the professionals as it is very hard to achieve a natural look.
QUICK FLOWER CARE TIP If your flowers came to you in a vase, be sure to keep your water clear. If your water begins to turn cloudy, pour it out and refill it with water and plant food solution as directed on the package. Any leaves below the waterline need to be plucked off. This will keep your flowers looking fantastic for as long as possible!

Big Congratulations to the National Floral Designer of the Year
On October 2-4, the National Alliance of Floral Associations had their annual conference in Columbus, Ohio. The National Floral Designer of the Year competition also took place at this event! The competition was fierce, but Robbin Yelverton AIFD, CFD, PFCI came away with the win!
