Grandparents Day History

The concept of Grandparents Day began in 1970 when a West Virginia mother of 15 saw the need to preserve family heritage and address the loneliness of the elderly in nursing homes. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed by West Virginia Governor Arch Moore. By 1978 Grandparents Day had become a national Holiday, when President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the 1st Sunday after Labor Day as Grandparents Day.
