Canadian Thanksgiving Versus United States Thanksgiving

The purpose for the Canadian Thanksgiving is to give thanks for a successful harvest. Since their harvest season is early, the Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October. Although pilgrims are not associated with the Canadian Thanksgiving, many other US Thanksgiving traditions like pumpkin pie, turkey, cornucopia and "giving thanks to God” are connected. In fact, many United States Thanksgiving traditions were incorporated into the Canadian Thanksgiving when Americans, loyal to the British during the American Revolution, immigrated to Canada.

The original purpose for Thanksgiving in the U.S. was the celebration of survival by the pilgrims and a bountiful harvest. Sharing food from a bountiful harvest with neighbors was the foundation on which Thanksgiving was built. In the U.S., Thanksgiving decorations include: paper turkeys, pumpkin and squash displays, autumn-colored leaves and chrysanthemums. Most American households decorate their table with a flower arrangement. Many Thanksgiving centerpieces include chrysanthemum blooms in warm fall colors. Playing off the Horn of Plenty concept, many florists create Thanksgiving flower arrangements in a cornucopia shaped container. Countless Americans travel over the Thanksgiving holiday to the homes of family or friends. Top host/hostess gifts during these travels include: wine, flowers and fruit baskets.

For whatever reason, or however you celebrate the holiday, the key is to have a Happy Thanksgiving.
