May Newsletter: Mothers Day Magnificence

fsn_banner_229

It’s Mothers Day once again. The day we all set aside to say, “Thank You” to the woman who stood by our side and supported us from day one. She picked us up when we needed help, let us do it ourselves when necessary and always looked out for our well-being. She cheered us on during the game, applauded our performance on the stage and swelled with pride at every achievement. She was tough when she had to be, comforting when we needed her to be and loving through it all.

This woman should receive all your love this Mothers Day. And she’d probably also enjoy some lovely flowers. And doesn’t she deserve it? After all, she’s Mom.

DIY Pressed Flower Phone Case

We are always on the lookout for new and exciting ways to use flowers, and any time we find an idea that is “outside the box”, we like to highlight it. That’s the case today as we ran across this excellent DIY post on Etsy from author Clare McGibbon detailing how to decorate a phone case with dried and pressed flowers! The process is simple, though not without need for a steady hand. Still, Mrs. McGibbon includes a method for clean-up if you get a little wild with the resin.

Best Reasons to Send Flowers in May

#1. Mother’s Day – May 11th – This really is the mother of all flower-sending holidays and that’s because nothing shows love and unconditional affection like fresh-cut flowers. Have your mom’s flowers delivered during the week to her office so she can show them off to her friends. Or have flowers arrive on the weekend to help her enjoy her special day.

#2. Armed Forces Day – May 17th and Memorial Day – May 26th – That’s 2 chances you have this month to show your love for the red, white and blue! Armed Forces Day salutes soldiers currently serving in the military while Memorial Day is set aside to honor those fallen heroes who gave their life in service. Send a beautiful patriotic themed bouquet to a special friend or family member who serves or served their country through military service.

#3. May Birthdays – Have family or friends with a May birthday coming up soon? Show them just how thoughtful you are with a lovely arrangement.

Mother’s Day and Flowers: A Time-Honored Tradition Mother’s Day has long been synonymous with flowers. In fact, the tradition of giving carnations, and then eventually wearing them as corsages, began all the way back at the inception of the American version of the holiday. Why? Well, carnations were the favorite flower of founder Anna Jarvis’ mother. Anna Jarvis arrived at the first Mother’s Day celebration in 1908 with 500 of these gorgeous flowers!

April Flower Spotlight: Lily When thinking about which flower to spotlight for April, there could only ever be one choice. Which flower is most synonymous with April? Like Valentine’s Day is to the rose so Easter is to the Lily.

March Newsletter: Luck O’ the Irish!

Luck O' The Irish

St. Patrick’s Day is coming quickly, and it’s time to break out some green!

What’s that? You don’t own much in the way of green? No problem. You can still avoid pinches from loved ones and co-workers. A quick stop by your local florist will provide you with all the green you’ll need. Get a gorgeous flower to wear on your lapel, a beautiful bouquet for your significant other or for the slightly more bold, a green garland to wear around your neck or even upon your brow! Whatever your need or desire, you know you’ll find it when you shop with your local florist.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Best Reasons to Send Flowers in March

Another page has turned on the calendar. March marks the month of fresh spring blooms and reasons to get up, get out and get happy as the days are longer and warmer. You can send some of your new found joy to others with an arrangement from your local florist. Here are the very best reasons to send flowers this month:

#1. St. Patrick’s Day – March 17th – Kiss me, I’m Irish! This day got its start commemorating Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland in the 17th century. Over the years it has grown into a global celebration of Irish heritage and culture. From parades to green beer, almost every city finds a way to celebrate. If you aren’t celebrating, or at least wearing a bit o’ green, you might get a pinch! Send a little green to someone special this St. Patrick’s Day and the luck of the Irish might just be with you until next year.

#2. First Day of Spring – March 20th – Finally! It has arrived! Sometimes nothing can be sweeter than saying goodbye to the winter winds and welcoming in the changes that spring offers up every year. New life is popping up everywhere and flowers are the first to get started with so many beautiful varieties coming into season. There is certainly someone in your life that could use some perking up after such a long winter, even if that someone is yourself! Send a lovely fresh-cut arrangement of new spring flowers to knock the winter blues away for good.

#3. March Birthdays – Daffodil, narcissus, jonquil, Lent lily, Easter bells, whatever you decide to call it, this happy harbinger of spring is the official birth flower for March. So if you know a special someone with a birthday this month, daffodils are really the best choice. They have a wide range of meaning covering unrequited love, chivalry, affection returned, desire, and love. And all varieties are fragrant and beautiful this season.

10 New St. Patrick’s Day Card Messages It’s time for some GREEN! That’s right, folks. St. Patrick’s Day is coming and unless you like being pinched (but to be honest, who doesn’t enjoy a good pinch now and again), you need to suit up! But before you enjoy the sights and sounds of this Irish-honoring holiday, make sure you’ve covered your bases and ordered flowers for your friends and loved ones. Local florists have the best options and can make something that might just help you get the Luck O’ The Irish!

FSN Visits the Georgia State Convention! Flower Shop Network made their presence known at the Georgia State Convention held in Atlanta, GA, at the Marriott Century Center Hotel February 28 – March 2nd! It was a fabulous weekend with lots of vendors and some excellent presentations. And who didn’t love the President’s Ball, the Burton’s Cup or the Chopped Competition? With all of the events available, there was something there for everyone!

FSN Baby Shower There’s only one thing better than having a baby, and that’s having two! That’s what happened to Flower Shop Network employee Joe Teasley and his wife Kelly. They were recently blessed with two beautiful additions to their family in Brody (boy) and Kodie (girl). To celebrate, Flower Shop Network decided to host a baby shower in their honor! (I have it on good authority that no babies were actually showered at the event.)

FSN Pre-Chili Cook-off Chili Cook-off The Mission Outreach of Northeast Arkansas is hosting a chili cook-off fundraiser on March 8th of this year. Flower Shop Network is excited to participate, but we only want to present the best possible chili to the contest. In order to find that perfect chili, we decided to hold a pre-chili cook-off chili cook-off. Of course this pre cook-off had nothing to do with a desire to eat delicious chili until we popped. It was all business. You believe that right? Okay, moving on.

FSN February Newsletter: Feeling the Love

Valentine's Day

February is a month for fun, family and flowers. From love and relationships on Valentine’s Day to the birth of George Washington on President’s Day, the focus is on celebration. But you don’t have to wait for a holiday to appreciate those you love, and you don’t have to stop loving them once that holiday has passed. It’s a daily undertaking.

And is there a better way to spread happiness than with a beautiful bouquet of flowers? Don’t allow another day to pass without letting your family and friends feel the love. Contact your local florist today!

Best Reasons to Send Flowers in February

February is the winter month that works so hard to shake the chill and celebrate love. Maybe you have noticed the endless seas of red and pink at local stores or watched as people find little ways to enjoy themselves and help others during a harsh winter. With your help, we can spread the warmth and bring a smile. Here are the reasons you should be sending flowers this month:

#1. Valentine’s Day – Feb 14th – As if you couldn’t see this one coming from a mile away! Valentine’s Day is one of the biggest flower-sending holidays of the entire year. That’s because beautiful fresh-cut flowers are the very best way to say what’s on your mind! Whether it is “I love you!” or “I’m trying my best for you.” or simply “You are special!” – flowers can mean anything you want them to mean. And that special person who got flowers? They won’t forget it.

#2. American Heart Month – The CDC made the natural choice to bring about heart health awareness during the very month we associate with love. Most people know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women but the surprising news is heart disease is preventable and controllable. This is information worth sharing. If you know a loved with who is at risk, sending red-themed flowers for Amercian Heart Month can be a gentle reminder that they can take control of their heart health.

#3. Winter Olympic Games – Feb 7th – 23rd – It is an exciting time in the world of sports as the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia begins! Arrangements featuring the classic blue, yellow, black, green, and red can be custom designed for some 5 ring inspiration. This type of flower creation would be a thoughtful and exciting gift for your avid Olympic follower or, best of all, a bit of encouragement for a young athlete with big dreams. Ask your local florist to get in the spirit of the games today!

Blog Spotlight: Monday Morning Flower and Balloon Co.

Florists are the authority on all things floral. For most it is their passion as well as their job. These men and women overflow with knowledge about flowers and share that information on their websites every day. They describe events they’ve decorated, arrangements they’ve designed and even classes they offer. There’s no end to the information you can glean when reading blogs by local florists.

Because of that fact, the Bloomin’ Blog is choosing the blog of one florist each month to spotlight. If you need floral ideas for a wedding, a party or just for your home, there’s no better place to go than the source, your local florist!

January Newsletter: Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland

The holidays are behind us, and a new year has begun!

January is traditionally a month for reflection, a time to think about the past year and all the things we can do to make the coming year better. The natural world has grown silent. Birds have migrated. Animals have gone into hibernation. And Mother Nature herself seems to be holding her breath as she faces a clean slate on which to build for the coming spring.

Snow blankets the ground and wind greets us with an icy chill, but even now, amidst all the starkness and cold, flowers still find a way to bloom. Some of the most beautiful florals thrive at this time of year bringing true meaning to the phrase “winter wonderland”.

As you sit cozy at home, warm coffee cup in hand  and looking out the window at the frozen landscape, don’t hesitate to make bold plans for the future. After all, you are not the hibernating bear. You are the winter flower, a bloom which finds a way to thrive even as the rest of the world is falling asleep.

Flower Spotlight: Carnations

This month we are spotlighting the carnation!

Carnation Origins

The carnation is a beautiful flower most likely native to the Mediterranean region. I say “most likely” because it has been so widely cultivated over the last 2,000 years that no one knows for sure the full range of this flower’s natural origins. Still, if you were to try growing your own carnations, you’d need well drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil and full sun. Certainly in keeping with a Mediterranean climate.

Best reasons to Send Flowers in January!

Gray and blue don’t have to color this wintery month. We have some great reasons to send exciting flowers in January so not only can you help celebrate a special occasion, you can feel great about brightening someone else’s day… and your own!

1. Chinese New Year – Jan. 31st – Also referred to as the Lunar New Year, this traditional Chinese holiday is marked by bright red decor, big feasts, offerings to the spirits, and cleaning house to make way for good luck in the new year. Help someone near and dear to you celebrate good fortune and happiness with a bright Asian-inspired bouquet! Send flowers for their reunion dinner or as a wish for good luck in the coming year.

2. January Birthdays – You gotta love nature for creating flowers that are designed to bloom even in the gloomy cold seasons. So if there is a birthday to celebrate this month, January’s birth flower, the carnation, is ready to thrill and delight. Carnations are symbolic of love, fascination and distinction.

3. Beat The Winter Blues – Even if you don’t have a full blown case of seasonal affective disorder, long grey winters have a way of bringing everyone down. After the December holidays and marching right into the coldest days of the year in many climates, January is an especially hard month for sunny dispositions. Battle the winter blues by sending some bright flowers!

Don’t Wait When Preparing for Christmas

No holiday is more important when it comes to early planning than Christmas Day. It has been estimated that over 95% of the US population celebrates Christmas. That means for every outside vendor you need to use in planning your Christmas party, you are competing with everyone in town for their business! It’s important to get started early and make sure you get your name on the list. There is no time or space for lollygagging. When it comes to your Christmas celebration, you want it done right!

Best reasons to Send Flowers in December!

There are so many reasons that flowers make a perfect gift. Through color, texture, shape and fragrance, your local florist can help you discover a genuine way to reach out to those important people in your life. So without delay, here are the best reasons to send flowers this December.

1. December Birthdays – This reason tops our list because those friends and family who have birthdays during the month of the December always have to compete with so many other festivities. A birthday should be the unique celebration of just one person. Make the day truly about your loved one by sending beautiful birthday blooms on their special day.

2.Winter Solstice – December 21st – In the Northern Hemisphere, this day is often referred to as the “longest night.” Each year, as the world spins, there comes a point where the lengthening of winter days reaches its apex and this has long been celebrated as the Winter Solstice. While sometimes the winter blues can get us down, you can brighten someone’s day with a cheery wintery mix of beautiful flowers. Smiles are sure to lighten up any dark day.

3. Christmas – December 25th – Flowers are a fantastic way to decorate for Christmas and make a wonderful gift for the entire household. Whether sending deep red roses with bright green stems, a fragrant holiday wreath or a breath-taking centerpiece that ties the dinner table together, you can show your warmest love from afar and be a presence in the home of those you hold near and dear.

The VaseOff! Challenge

The VaseOff! Challenge is a competition put together to increase consumer awareness of the expertise of local florists and which showcases their ability to design specifically for an individual. Walter Fedyshyn was paired with a Chicago-based blogger named Melissa Williams who writes about DIY projects, design, home decor, travel and much more! He read her blog and perused her social media pages to learn as much as he could about her, and then created a design with those bits of knowledge in mind!

The resulting design beat out the other three competitors for first place! Good job, Walter!

3 Hot Holiday Florals!

The holidays are here and there’s no better way to celebrate than decorating your home with floral goodness. It doesn’t matter which holiday you’re celebrating, your local florist has everything needed to make something unique and beautiful. Here are three hot holiday florals to make your season bright!

Floral Centerpieces

One of the hot floral items any holiday season is floral centerpieces! These make the perfect decorations for placing on dinner tables, end tables or fireplace mantles. They make a great gift for the host or hostess of a holiday party, or they can be used to decorate those bare surfaces in your own home. If you are looking to spruce up your holiday decorations, floral centerpieces are the way to go!

Wreaths

What one item says, “Happy Holidays” more than a natural wreath? And when you buy from your local florist, you know the end result will be both creative and gorgeous. These round, holiday symbols can be hung on your door, on your wall or even along your front porch. And talk about gifts! Wreaths, like centerpieces, make excellent gifts for the host or hostess of any holiday party.

Floral Swags

In case you aren’t sure, this is a string of flowers and greenery that can be draped along the mantles of fireplaces, strung along the wall and even hung around your mailbox! These are the perfect complement to any holiday decor and can be designed by your florist to match the color scheme of your home. No holiday decorating job is complete without a few floral swags.

November Newsletter: Having a Terrific Turkey Day!

fsn_banner_220

November is the month that everyone sets aside for giving thanks, and Flower Shop Network is no different! This month we’d like to take a few sentences to thank you, our florists and customers! Without the talented men and women who take up the challenging mantle of florist in every city and small town in the world, Flower Shop Network would not exist. A person does not become a florist to get rich. Instead, they do it because it’s something they love. Making other people happy during their most special moments in turn makes the florist happy. So to all florists out there, thank you.

For those of you out there who love flowers and bring your business to local florists, thank you. Without you, there would be no local florist to use. The local florist is the life’s blood of the floral industry, and you are the ones that allow them to thrive! So thank you all, and know that Flower Shop Network is committed to doing our part to help the floral industry and local florists flourish!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Best Reasons to Send Flowers in November!

While we like to say every day is a perfect day to make someone happy with flowers, here are our absolute favorite reasons to spread love and kindness this month.

1. Hanukkah (first day) – November 28th – This is a very special year for the first day of Hanukkah. This is the first and last time Hanukkah will ever overlap with Thanksgiving! People are having fun coining terms like “Thanksgivukkah” and “Hanugivingkkah” just for the occasion. And there are so many beautiful blooms to help you celebrate. White, silver, and blue combinations are the most popular and are a perfect addition to the celebration table.

2.Thanksgiving – November 28th – Time to feast and give thanks with our families! And probably watch some football too. Make your celebration special with a fall-inspired centerpiece. Also, centerpieces make a wonderful gift to send to family and friends unable to come together for the occasion. Show gratitude for love and friendship with flowers

3. November Birthdays – November’s birthday flower is the chrysanthemum. Available in so many different varieties and colors, chrysanthemums will let someone with a special birthday know that you considered their gift carefully. A red chrysanthemum means “I love you” while white chrysanthemums mean innocence, purity, and pure love. Yellow chrysanthemums mean “slighted love.” Ask your local florist to include the beautiful and colorful chrysanthemum in a fresh cut arrangement or to deliver a gorgeous long-lasting blooming plant.

Don’t Forget the Florals for Thanksgiving!

Bountiful Cornucopia Thanksgiving Tradition

Thanksgiving dinner. Is there a more delicious collection of food gathered together at one meal? Family comes together, gives thanks for the blessings in their lives throughout the past year and shares in a meal prepared to reflect the bounty they have received. It is a time of gratitude, love and appreciation for what and who has blessed your life.

What better way to express those emotions to your friends and family than through a gift of flowers?

Giving Thanks with Flowers

This year, instead of arriving at your dinner with a prepared dish in hand, offer a beautiful fall bouquet to your hostess! She will be far more grateful to receive gorgeous flowers than yet another green bean casserole. The flowers will make the perfect decoration for the festivities and will be a boon to everyone’s day!

FLOWER CARE TIP After carefully removing the good flowers, clean the vase thoroughly with soapy water to remove any bacteria that could cause the fresh flowers to deteriorate even quicker. Be sure to rinse thoroughly. More Flower Care Tips
