Dividing A Peace Lily

ask the expert

How do you divide a peace lily? Mine has become enormous and unmanageable.
Thanks

  1. Chris,

Propagation of a Spathiphyllum (peace lily) is easy. I start by looking at the peace lily and deciding how many plants I would like to have. Usually with a large peace lily I can get 2 to 4 plants. Next I make sure I have pots big enough for the “new plants”. Select pots that are slightly bigger than the root clump of the “new plant” — usually one size smaller than the original pot. I fill the pot with a light potting soil mixture. Then I take the peace lily out of it’s pot and turn it upside down — with a large serrated knife* I cut a section out of the peace lily making sure that I have a root system and foliage base that are fairly equal in size. Then I place the newly propagated plant in the pot and add potting soil to fill in the space between the plant and the pot. Remember to keep the plant at the same soil line* as it was in the original pot. Water the “new plant” and add soil if needed. From this point on I treat it the same as I did the mother plant.

*You can use any type of knife but a serrated knife makes a smoother cut.
*Soil line – usually the soil line should be at the point where the root ball and the foliage meet. It is usually better if the leaves are not covered with soil.

  2. Thank you so much for this info. I\’ve been searching everywhere on here on how to reproduce this plant and couldnt find anything helpful and descriptive. Once again, THANK YOU! (: ~maggie~
