Fertilizing Lucky Bamboo

Ask the Expert: i have placed my lucky bamboo in a flower pot containing pot mixture and gravel on top, with a plate underneath for the excess water to flow out. is it ok. kindly let me know what is the manure to be used for good healthy growth. will food waste from the acquarium be a good manure. how tall will it grow. what is its life. thanks

  1. Lucky bamboo can be potted in a soil mixture as long as you keep it moist. If the lucky bamboo was previously grown in water, it might go through transplant shock. Keep the roots very moist until they have time to adapt to the soil. Don’t fertilize during this period.

    Once your lucky bamboo has acclimated to its new environment, you can fertilize it. You can use water from your aquarium that contains waste product. Jill Florio wrote a interesting article in 2005 about using Aquarium Water as Houseplant Fertilizer. I use a liquid houseplant fertilizer on my lucky bamboo. The key to fertilizing lucky bamboo is not to over due it. I fertilize about every 2 months.

    As for height, I have seen them grow as tall as three feet.
