Origins & Symbolism

The scientific name of peace lilies is Spathiphyllum. The name derives from the Greek word ‘spath’ which means spoon and ‘phyl’ meaning leaves. This plant grows in Colombia, Venezuela, South America, Central America and Southeast Asia.

Peace lilies are known as the bringers of peace. The white spath represents a white flag which is worldly recognized as a truce signal. They are also known to symbolize prosperity, tranquility and are often given to express sympathy after someone’s passing.

According to NASA Clean Air Study, peace lilies have air-purifying qualities. They are also said to balance the energies of a room. So, if the energy is feeling a little heavy, place a spath in your home or workplace and breathe in the purified air!

Unlike many people think, the flowers of peace lilies are not the white spathes on top. The flowers are tiny and grow in the spadix. Mind blowing, huh?!
