Each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day, we celebrate some very special people in our lives: our grandparents! This year, Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, September 11th, and it’s the perfect time to show your grandparents some love and let them know you’re thinking of them!
History
Marian McQuade is officially recognized as the founder of Grandparents Day in the United States. Her goal was to educate young people about the contributions of seniors throughout history. She encouraged “adopting” a grandparent to learn more about their lives, challenges, and desires for the future. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter officially signed a proclamation designating the first Sunday after Labor Day each year National Grandparents Day. It began being celebrated the following year in 1979.
