Lucky Bamboo is Turning Yellow?

Ask the Expert: My lucky bamboo leaves have all turned yellow. I just read on-line that I wasn’t supposed to put it outside. I did for one day thinking it would like some natural sun. Did I kill it?

  1. Lynn,

You have not killed your lucky bamboo. However it has been over exposed to light. Change the water immediately (use distilled water or let the tap water set for 24hrs before use) and place it inside out of direct sunlight or under some shade outdoors. Don’t fertilize for several months.
The lucky bamboo should begin to put new leaves out in a couple of weeks.

  2. Thank you for your quick response ! It’s already back in it’s normal place with new water !

  3. I have a curly bamboo plant and it turned yellow at the base of the stem, if i cut the yellow stem off and put it in water with it still live?

  4. Lindsay,

Any part of the stem that is green can be rooted to form a new plant. We have a Caring for Lucky Bamboo page and a Caring for Lucky Bamboo newsletter that will help you in this process. At the bottom of the Caring for lucky bamboo page are the instructions for propagating. Please let me know if you need anything else.
