Over Fertilized Peace Lily

Ask the Expert: Peace lily question

I made a big mistake when feeding my peace lily. I used full strength Miracle-Gro liquid all purpose plant food watering can type without diluting it and three days later the leaves are starting to shrivel up and dry out. The plant has wilted, even watering it didn’t seem to help. Any suggestions on bringing it back to life?

  1. Sue,

If you realize you have over fertilized any plant with a liquid fertilizer you can flush it with a little more water. However, usually the roots grab what they can as the water-fertilizer solution goes by
and may not take up the extra plain water. Peace lilies are pretty resilient and should bounce back with time. Don’t feed this plant for about a month and it should show signs of recovery.

I added soil to my peace lily because it seemed be to little for the pot in was in but the top soil is always dry as sand. Now the leaves all turning yellow then black. Should I try all new soil?

    Hi Bettie,
Peace lilies do not like to be planted too deep, so adding the soil on top won’t help with your watering issue, and is probably the cause of your yellowing. If you feel that your lily needs more soil, you should remove the plant from the pot and add the soil to the bottom, keeping the soil at the same level on the root ball. After this, you can get your peace lily back on a good watering routine. Make sure you are keeping the soil evenly moist, and do not let it go completely dry between waterings.
