Peace Lily in Major Distress

Ask the Expert: Peace Lily wilting! Help

Hi,
We recently repotted a very special Peace Lily in our office and it has since been as wilty as could be. At first, I thought we were underwatering it but we’ve watered it each day for three days straight and it is not bouncing back. The leaves are dark green, and the blackened edges we were seeing have not worsened but the plant is in one heck of a temper tantrum. What do we do? Our office has been warmer than normal lately, and the plant does not receive direct sunlight. Help!

People are very loving by nature and very attentive when people, animals and plants are ill. However in this case, you are loving your plant to death. All plants go through transplant shock when re-potted and will look a little rough for a few days. When re-potting always water the plant throughly when finished and then check for dryness before watering again. Unfortunately over-watering and under-watering can exhibit the same symptoms. Your peace lily is now in extreme shock and the best course of action is to leave it alone and water only if the soil feels dry. You might need to check on your drainage — make sure the pot has drain holes. You may want to read Peace Lily Plant Care.

Good luck. Luckily Peace Lilies are pretty tough.

  2. Jamie,

Thank you for your response. I think we may, indeed, be loving it to
death. It was given to my coworker at her father’s funeral. It is a
deeply loved plant. We’ll just have to back off and give it some space.

    Thanks so much!
