Rollin’ with the Changes

Change is a good thing, and this couldn’t be truer for The Flower Company located in Albuquerque, NM. The shop itself is over 40 years old, and the current owner, Adrianna Duran-Leon, took the reins from her aunt in 2016.

Adrianna began working in the shop at the age of twelve and her love for floral design has only blossomed over the years. Her first designs were bud vases made for her aunt during the holidays. She remembers the people at the front of the shop calling back each time one of her creations was sold. The thrill of someone buying a design she had made is one she still hasn’t forgotten.

The Flower Company has seen more than a few changes over the years. From changes in ownership to changes in the way they market themselves, The Flower Company has always worked towards keeping the shop moving. Adrianna believes that you can never stop learning, growing, and changing. Her aunt taught her the “old school” ways: Taking design classes, reading magazines, and attending shows to stay educated. This is something Adrianna still does. But she also knows that a shop can quickly become stagnate if they fail to keep up with the times.

One of the biggest changes they have made recently is the use of social media to help market their shop and reach a younger demographic. They have been working hard to grow their Instagram following in particular. Instagram is a great outlet for florists because it lets you easily show your work to the world. Adrianna has some great advice for any florist looking to pump up their social media: “Social media can be intimidating but it’s doable! Even if you have to take baby steps and build on each step. Eventually, it becomes easier and easier.”

The Flower Company mainly focuses on everyday arrangements. However, they are working towards doing more weddings, events, and unique designs. Adrianna’s favorite thing about being a member of the floral industry is having an outlet for her creativity, and helping people through flowers.

“I love what I do, so most days, work doesn’t feel like work. It’s a great feeling to know you’re helping people with flowers using a creative flare”
