Flower Arranging With Children

Flower Arranging With Kids Are you looking for something new to do with your kids? A new project that will showcase their creativity and imagination? Why not introduce the art of flower arranging? Flowers are bright and beautiful, with so many different characteristics, shapes and scents, your child will be captivated by the experience!

  • Arranging a basket with fresh cuts to spruce up the kitchen.
  • Creating beautiful potted plants to sit on the front porch is a great project for little hands.
  • A heart-felt arrangement made especially for grandma and grandpa.

Each season brings a different variety of flowers to pick from, each with their own special needs. Your local florist will be able to share with you the most appropriate flowers-types for children to handle. With some being more durable and sturdy than others, your florist will guide you in the process of choosing the most suitable flowers for your project. Letting your child pick out the flowers is a great way to get them going. Daisies, carnations and sunflowers are always a big hit. Whether you are picking from a garden or from your local flower shop it is a sure way to put a smile on their face.

Tip: Most local florists also sell loose flowers by the bunch. Take your children on a short trip to meet their florist, and be introduced to all the great flowers this season has to offer. Let them pick out their favorites to use in creating flower arrangements at home.

How To Prolong the Life of Cut Flowers

Fresh Cut FlowersAsk The Expert: just wondering, is  there a way to  prolong the life of cut flowers!!
thanks – bn

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:
Yes. The proper preparation will extend the life of cut flowers. There is some information on Flower Shop Network’s Blog that might be helpful to you.

Read Important Tips for Arranging Flowers at Home

Quick Tips For Prolonging The Life Of Cut Flowers:

  • Place stems or bouquets of fresh flowers in water as soon as possible.
  • Add preservative to the water. Preservative packets can be found at local flower shops.
  • Keep fresh flowers away from draft and extreme temperatures which can quickly dry the flowers and cause wilting.
  • Avoid placing flower arrangements in windowsills and other areas of full sun where flowers can wilt due to overheating.
  • All flower stems should be submerged in water. Decline of fresh flowers occurs much more quickly after stems have been removed from water.
  • To maintain fresh flowers longer, trim the stems and change to fresh water after a few days.
  • Immediately remove dead or wilting stems from fresh flower arrangements.

Hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if I can assist you with anything else.

Unique Diamond-White Flower Guide

White AnemoneApril’s favorite flower color is diamond-white. This year, we are spotlighting unique flower colors for you to use in custom flower arrangements, wedding bouquets, centerpieces, and anywhere else you might need great-looking flowers. To make choosing the colors a little more interesting, we are starting with birthstone colors. Last month’s was aquamarine, and this month it’s diamond, or whiteish-silver.

Since ‘diamond’ is not really a color, we are associating it with lighter shades of gray. There are many, stunning flowers that come in light-gray colors, as well as shimming-silver and pale-blue. When creating a color scheme using these light-grays, you can either stick with a monochrome palette, or add a punchy, accent color to really bring out the dynamics! Imagine bright red mixed with silvery-white colors, or how about a vivid-blue paired with diamond flowers and silver accent.

This is a great flower guide for brides looking for unique color palettes and unusual flowers for their wedding.

Top 5 Amazing Benefits of Equisetum In Flower Arrangements

There are many reasons to run out and grab throngs of equisetum stalks (Equisetum hyemale) for use in flower arrangements. Also known as horse tail, I would never have known how cool and diverse equisetum is in flower arrangements if it were not for watching Regina Berryman work with this amazing plant material one day. Regina is certified through the American Institute of Floral Design as well as the American Academy of Floriculture.

Regina Berryman Creating An Equisetum (Horsetail) Arrangement

I was caught off guard one day while watching Regina create a contemporary arrangement of red gerbera daisies and equisetum. The movement and flow that this odd little stalk created was very eye-catching and rather charming. Regina was kind enough to explain a few of the many benefits of using horse tail [Read more…]

Reuben Sandwich Reminds Me St Patrick’s Day Is Only 5 Days Away

Last night while I was eating my Reuben sandwich, I realized that St Patrick’s Day was just a few days away. I love St Patrick’s day. What’s not to love about a holiday that promotes drinking larger quantities of green beer. Actually I don’t like regular beer – so I not so sure about green beer – but the pub crawl participants seems to adore it. I love St Patrick’s day because of the positive nature of the holiday. Four leaf clovers – shamrocks (good luck), the color green (money and prosperity) and corned beef and cabbage or bacon and cabbage (just good eats). This is a holiday that focuses on fun and optimism with festivals, parades and “Kiss Me I’m Irish” shirts. To celebrate the holiday many people send potted shamrocks to spread luck to friends and family members. I personally like to send and receive flower arrangements with Bells of Irleand instead – shamrocks remind me of a weed called oxalis that drives me crazy in our greenhouse. Here is an example of the kind of arrangement I send my folks on St Patrick’s Day.

If you want one that works for both St Patrick’s Day and Easter you could send this

Flower Arrangement For St Patrick’s Day or Easter

After all Easter is only a fews day after St Patrick’s Day this year.

Of course florists across the nation have some wonderful ideas when it comes to arranging flowers for St Patrick’s Day. In fact, if any florist wants to send me a picture of their St Patrick’s Day flower designs,  I’ll post them on the blog. We might even get readers to vote on the best one.

You have five days till the fun and festivities of St Patrick’s Day. So plan to have a good one – I plan on it.

If you have a special way of celebrating St Patrick’s Day let me know. I’m always curious about how others celebrate. You never know when you’ll discover something great.

Flower Etiquette For Hanukkah.

Ask the Expert: I know that Hanukkah begins at sundown today, but I don’t know the proper etiquette for gift giving during the holiday. I would like to send my friend a flower arrangement to acknowledge the importance of this holiday to their faith. Would it be appropriate?
