Spreading Holiday Cheer through Christmas Traditions

Christmas is a holiday rich in history and tradition. A religious holiday to Christians, but celebrated by non-Christians as well. Christmas is celebrated on December 25th and some believe this date was chosen for Christmas because of its relevance to the Winter Solstice. Although celebration of Christmas is marked as December 25th, Christmas involves a whole season called Christmastide.  The Christmas season is filled with holiday cheer and sharing with family and friends.

Christmas is celebrated by many but with varying traditions. Most Christmas traditions involve some form of holiday cheer and those Christmas traditions can involve one or a combination of the following:
  • Decorating a Christmas tree.
  • Singing Christmas carols.
  • Christmas gift giving.
  • Use of the Yule log.
  • Hanging Christmas lights.
  • Belief in Santa Claus.
  • A nativity scene display.
  • Hanging Christmas stockings.
  • Hanging Mistletoe.
  • Preparing Wassail.
  • Sending Christmas cards.
  • Displaying Christmas Decorations.
  • Playing Christmas music.
  • Hanging a Christmas wreath.
  • Telling Christmas stories.
  • Baking Christmas cookies.
  • Performing in Christmas plays.
  • Visiting Christmas tree farms.
  • Using holly and their berries for decoration.
  • Hanging Christmas ornaments.
  • Sending and displaying holiday flowers.
  • Lighting Christmas candles.
  • Use of an Advent wreath.

Singing Christmas carols can be a wonderful way to spread holiday cheer. What is a more lovely way to spread holiday cheer at Christmas than by singing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" or "I'll Be Home For Christmas". Count down the days till Christmas by singing, "The Twelve Days of Christmas". Nothing is more precious than getting a six-year-old to sing, "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth".

Another way to show your holiday cheer is the tradition of Christmas decorating.  Some homeowners go to great extremes; large Christmas light displays, elaborate nativity scenes and huge Christmas trees overflowing with Christmas ornaments and surrounded by tons of Christmas gifts. In more simplistic displays, only an Advent wreath and a candle maybe used.  Whether Christmas decorations are elaborate or simple, the key is spreading holiday cheer to your family and friends.
