Mothers Day Celebrations

Did you know that Mothers Day is celebrated in over 40 countries? Mothers day is celebrated the second Sunday of May in the U.S., Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium. May 11th is the International Mothers Day while May 10th is the Mexican Mothers Day. Not all Mothers Day celebrations are in May. Spain honors its mothers on December 8th, which is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrating Mary.

Mothers Day and Flowers

Just as the date of Mothers Day varies from country to country, so does the way mothers are honored. The French celebrate Mothers Day the last Sunday of May with a cake representing a bouquet of flowers.  The English also celebrate Mothers Day with a special cake (Simnel), but they also present their mothers with flowers. German mothers are honored with Mothers day cards, flowers and bronze, silver and gold medals.  In the United States, mothers are honored with Mothers Day cards, flowers, special dinners and phone calls.  Flowers are a very important part of the U.S. Mothers Day celebration.  The red carnation is the official Mothers day flower.  Wearing red or pink flowers especially carnations on Mothers Day symbolizes that your mother is still living.  To honor your mother who has passed away, white flowers are worn and often their graves are adorned with carnations.

A Unique Mothers Day Gift

Flower corsages are a long-standing Mothers Day tradition. To make this tradition unique, give your Mother an orchid corsage. Orchids are the symbol of delicate beauty and extremely beautiful as a corsage.  The elegant rose is always a great gift for mother; make it a unique Mothers day gift by arranging it in a non-traditional way.  A tussie mussie or nosegay is a non-traditional ways yet beautiful ways to present roses to your mother.

Where ever you live and however you celebrate Mothers Day, you can be sure that your local professional florist will be willing and able to help you honor your mother.
