Celebrating Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day History

Grandparents Day, celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day, is a special day set aside to honor grandmothers and grandfathers for their ongoing love and support of their grandchildren. Realizing the special contribution that grandparents make to their grandkids' lives, Marian McQuade, mother of 15 and grandmother of more than 40, proposed the creation of Grandparents Day in 1970. It was proclaimed a state holiday in 1973 and came to national prominence in 1978 when President Jimmy Carter signed legislation designating the day as a national holiday. It has since been enjoyed by grandparents and grandchildren alike every September.

Florists Help Celebrate Grandparents Day

Through the years, florists throughout the United States have continually devised countless creative ways for kids to express their one-of-a-kind love for their grandparents. Obviously, flowers are a perennial favorite, but creative florists have found many ways to create more personalized gifts. Some of the most popular include flowers combined with photographs, personalized messages from the children, items handmade by the children, and items that are used on a daily basis, reminding the grandparents of their little darlings every day of the year. For example, kids can create a coupon book for their grandparents. Each coupon can be redeemed for a visit, a hug, etc. Grandparents will love it, and flowers can be incorporated as well. To allow time for these personalized items to be created, be sure to contact a florist several weeks prior to the holiday.

Grandparents live out of town? Not a problem their hometown florist can easily help you create a personalized grandparents day gift for them.
