Why Did My Peace Lily Quit Blooming?

Ask the Expert: Why did my peace lily quit blooming? My peace lily is green and bushy and healthy but lately it has stopped blooming. The leaves are still a dark green and NOT turning yellow or black. New leaves continue to grow. I water it according to my moisture meter and I distilled water. Is there a problem or is just resting through winter? Susan

Plants sometimes need a rest period between blooms – this rest period can be any where from a couple of days to several weeks. However, you can stimulate the blooming cycle by removing the spent blooms. Follow the bloom stalk to the base of the plant and cut it off – this will encourage the plant to produce need blooms.

There are four other factors that effect blooming.

    1. Water – Peace lilies need to be kept moist. Over-watering and under-watering can inhibit blooming. Your moisture meter should elevate any question as to when to water. You might want to mist the peace lily occasionally – humidity encourages blooming.
    2. Fertilizer – peace lilies need adequate fertilizer to bloom.
    3. Light – peace lights need ample light to bloom. Although peace lilies tolerate low light levels, in order to bloom they may require more light.
    4. Temperature – peace lilies don’t like wide temperature swings. Keep away from drafts or air vents. Optimum temperatures for a peace lily are 72degrees (day) and no lower than 65 degrees (night).

If your environmental conditions are correct your peace lily should bloom. Give it time – it might need a little rest before it blooms again.

  4. Charles, it looks like you have a case of scale insects. Scale will prick the leaves and suck out the sap causing leaves to turn brittle and snap off. Warm, dry air encourages their multiplication. To get rid of scale, you can use a scalicide found at your local nursery or garden center, or the more organic way would be to carefully prick off the insects or brush them off with a solution of soap and alcohol. Move your plant to a cooler location and increase the humidity to keep them from coming back. Hope this helps!

  5. Hi My Peace Plant has white specks on the leaves. What is this and how do I safely remove it?
    Thanks!

  6. Hi Priscilla,

White specks could be an indication of scale, which is an insect, but it could also be fungal. Please send me a picture so I can better identify the issue. Send picture to rachel.brantley@flowershopnetwork.com

  7. My peace lilly sits about 7’from an east window. I’ve had others in this spot that did well. It’s in a small 4 pot, and the plant’s leaves are about a foot tall. They come out nice and green, but one by one,the leaf will get a brown spot along one side of it. Then it turns yellow and then the stem turns yellow. I water it when my meter says it’s dry, but no telltale signs of drooping like normal. I water till it drains thru. It hasn’t been fertilized. Should it be put in a bigger pot with looser soil?

  8. Jamie Woods says:

    Hi Patty,
I think your peace lily may be experiencing a water issue. Even though your meter says it is dry, sometimes they are not accurate. Have you checked your soil manually to make sure it is dry before watering? Peace lilies are normally good with being watered once a week. Once the water issue has been corrected, your lily should recover. This can take a couple of weeks for a full recovery.

  10. I have had my peace lily for 3 years. It has never been without blooms. I reported about 15 months ago. Just recently I noticed there are no blooms….any ideas?

There are some plants that need a rest period between blooms. These rest periods can be short term or long term. However, you can help them bloom by removing spent blooms by folling the bloom stalk to the base of the plant and cut it off.
There are also other factors that could affect your blooming like watering, fertilizer, light or temperature.

  14. I was given a peace Lilly filled with blooms a year ago in May and it hasnt bloomed in about 12 months. I have new lush foliage it’s sits on a laundry bench that is bright and airy. I sit in a bowl of water once a week until the woven base is very moist and occasionally liquid fertilise it what am I doing wrong.

Hi Joanne! Peace lilies need to be kept moist. Try watering the peace lily soil directly and make sure it’s getting enough water. You might also try moving it to a different area and see if that helps.
