Veterans Day

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is one of the most important holidays we celebrate in the United States. On this day we honor all veterans currently serving our military and those who have served in the past. Their love for this country, courage, and faith in the future of this nation must be recognized not just on this holiday but each and every day.

Facts About Veterans Day

The correct spelling of this day is Veterans Day. Many people often add an apostrophe before the “s” or after the “s,” but according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this is “because it is not a day that ‘belongs’ to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.”

In 1968 Congress passed a “Uniform Monday Holiday Bill” which meant that holidays such as Washington’s Birthday, Columbus Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day all had to be celebrated on Mondays. This was all done to give people more of a three-day weekend to encourage traveling, which in turn would help the economy. Many states were not too happy about this being done, especially with Veterans Day, and so on Septemeber 20th, 1975, President Ford signed a bill that officially made November 11th the official Veterans Day.

Veterans Day was formerly known as Armistice Day. The day was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson back in November of the year 1919. This was done in recognition of the end of WWI when weapons ceased on November 11th at 11 AM in 1918.

Veterans Day and Memorial Day

Veterans Day was created to recognize all those who have honorably served in the military, while Memorial Day is in remembrance of those who have died in service to our country.
