Can You Name This Iris?

Ask the Expert: Iris identification

Years ago someone gave me a start of this iris and I would like to know the name. Maybe Frank Adams variety but I’m not sure since so many look the same. I would really appreciate an opinion. Debra I have attached pictures below.

  1. Debra,

I know quite a bit about growing Iris and Iris flower arrangements but there are thousands of Bearded Iris cultivars. You are absolutely right when you say many of them look alike. If I had to guess as to which your is Frank Adams, Blatant, Nashborough and Taco Supreme come to mind.

I’m not sure where you live but, the Missouri Botanical Garden has a very extensive Iris garden and you might want to visit it. I will continue to search for more information. Hopefully one of our members will chime in with suggestions.

  2. Debra,

I received a message today from the Missouri Botanical Garden about the iris. Here it is:

“The iris in the photos is mindful of an older iris variety in our collection named ‘Frosted Velvet’. Positive ID usually requires side by side comparison with the standard.

    Thank you for your interest.

I hop this information will help you.
