Celebrate the Casablanca Lily

Last week my senses were bombarded with the sights, sounds, tastes and feelings (emotional not physical) of the 4th of July. I know many people who delight in the smells associated with the 4th, however my olfactory system seems to ignore the acrid scent of the fireworks or the sweet smoky smell of barbecue. After a week of feeling ignored my sense of smell received a long awaited treat. With every breath, the intoxicating aroma coming from the Casablanca Lilies that were blooming in my garden captivated my nose.

With the delicate and fragile look of these substantial white blooms, many underestimate the powerful rich scent of the Casablanca lily. The heavenly aroma of this oriental lily has an inviting quality drawing you into any personal or public, small or large, casual or formal celebration. In fact, celebrate is the meaning of this flower. Alone or mixed with other flowers, the Casablanca Lily is a fantastic way to celebrate daily life or special occasions.

I cut the Casablanca Lilies in my garden taking them inside so the aroma can drift throughout my house. During the winter when everything is blah and I need a pick me up, my local florist supplies me with this wonderful flower. I encourage you to experience the beauty and enticing aroma of the Casablanca Lily.

Here are a few ideas:
During a stressful weak – entice co-workers to celebrate the workday by placing a vase of Casablanca Lilies on your desk or at Christmas include Casablanca Lilies in your centerpiece arrange.

Let me know how you celebrate with Casablanca Lilies.

Adam’s Needle Yucca isn’t blooming.

Ask the Expert: My Adam’s Needle has not bloomed in years.
I see others in the neighbourhood, that are ok so I know it is not the weather. I have one in a planter at the side of the house facing west. The other is nearby, but in a pot. Neither has bloomed in 5 years, although they appear to be expanding with new rosettes.
Thanks for your help.

Suzi Wong Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) heading for problems.

Ask the Expert: about Suzi Wong ferns

My Suzy Wong fern is getting brown and dry around the edges and bottom. It hasn’t had any new growth in quite a while and I really think it’s just slowly dying. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it, but it seems some fruit flies, or tiny little flies of some sort have taken up residence in the soil. Also, I keep the soil moist, and it sits in indirect light. Can you help? THANK YOU!

What is this tree?

Ask the Expert: What kind of tree is this?

My husband and I bought a house and this tree was already there. We are not gardeners to begin with so we had little luck identifying this tree! I hope you can help us! tree.JPG

More than fireworks on the 4th of July.

It’s late afternoon on July 3rd and I realized tomorrow is the 4th of July. July is the best month of the year. The country and I celebrate our birthdays this month. Every year, I celebrate the 4th of July with flowers — red, white and blue. This flower arrangement is to remind me that the 4th of July is more than fireworks and barbecue. It is a celebration of a great country and the people who made it “the land of the free and the home of the brave”. This year, my arrangement will be red gerberas, blue iris and white gladiolus. The meanings of these flowers is what the country represents to me.

Why is my Dracaena Turning Brown?

ask the expert

HELP!

I have this plant that my daughter sent to me two years ago. It had been doing OK but is now losing lots of leaves which are turning brown at the tips then the whole leaf turns and falls off. I recently replanted it and separated the roots in hopes that it would grow taller. Could it be in shock? I am not sure if I am over watering. Also I had inside for the winter then put it out in the spring (and it was doing well) Now I have had it both inside and outside. I live in Phoenix where the temp is now getting hot (112 degrees) Can you tell me what it is and where I should have it (inside or outside) as well as how much to water and what type of sunlight it needs.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

SAF Announces: Sales Tax Project Grants Two-Year Extension

SAF announced June 28th that an extension was granted on the sales tax issue concerning the taxation of wire services orders. Below is a copy of the article issued by SAF.

Sales Tax Project Grants Two-Year Extension

The Governing Board of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP) voted for a two-year extension of floral rules on the taxation of wire orders at its Detroit meeting last week. This extension, which lasts until Dec. 31, 2009, was granted to allow the project time to establish long-term rules concerning the taxation of wire orders. In addition, once the long-term rules are decided it will give time for the states and the industry to prepare to implement those rules. This extension means that sales taxes will continue to be collected by the sending florist and remitted to the local taxing authority — just as it has been for many decades.

The SSTP was started eight years ago as an attempt by the states to streamline the sales tax process by agreeing to uniform definitions and rules concerning the collection of sales taxes. This is done to facilitate the eventual passage of Federal legislation that will require retailers to collect sales taxes based on the destination of the product. The change will allow the states to collect billions of dollars in sales taxes that currently are not collected on Internet and catalogue sales. This change will level the competitive field between traditional “brick and mortar” retailers and Internet sellers, as well as bring significant additional revenue to the states. In the interim, by agreeing on uniform definitions and rules, many businesses are voluntarily agreeing to collect those taxes now.

Currently 15 states are full members of the SSTP that have enacted legislation in their individual states to bring their law in compliance with the SSTP agreement. Those states are Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia. Seven other states are associate members and are working on becoming full members. Those states are Arkansas, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee, Utah, Wyoming and Washington.

SAF and Teleflora have been involved in the project since June 2002, working on behalf of the floral industry by attending the meetings and participating in the various committees. FTD has also participated in the effort.
