What To Ask Your Wedding Florist

wedding florist

We just had to share this fantastic post from our friends at Wedding and Party Network. Here is what they gathered on the top questions to ask your wedding florist.

There are many little details that go into planning a wedding. One little detail that stands out is your flowers. Actually, flowers play a huge role in your wedding since they help convey your theme and style. This is why meeting with your florist is a must. Why? Your florist must understand exactly what you are wanting so they can achieve your vision. That is why we’ve reached out to Jan from New Look Floral Design in Rochester, MN to see what’s important to bring to a meeting with them and these are the responses we received.

1. What should brides bring to a consultation with a wedding florist?

Jan: Color swatches, pictures, budget amounts & corsage/bouti numbers

2. How far in advance should brides book their wedding florist?

Jan: 3-6 months

3. What are the top questions a bride should ask when contacting potential wedding florists?

Jan:

  • Is my wedding date available? Yes/No
  • Is my budget amount reasonable? Yes/No
  • Who will be designing my flowers? I will with help from staff
  • Do you have suggestions for my theme/flowers? Yes/No

These questions and answers are really helpful when you are planning to meet with your wedding florist. Also, thank you to New Look Floral Design for helping us out!

Avoid The Scams

As a business owner, it’s your job to protect your business in every way–especially toward scams.

Scams come in many different forms, such as phone calls, emails, and even through “snail mail.” Here are a couple of things you should know to protect yourself against scams.

Phone Calls

In a lot of cases, scammers are very sneaky and really make you think they are real. They can say they are from a reputable company like Google or Yahoo, and most of the time they know some information about you and your business, like your full name. So, it’s easy to mistake scammers for the real thing. Here are some ways to weed out those scammers:

  1. Request a signed copy of any promotional materials you allegedly agreed to be faxed to you.
  2. Request a copy of any recording of any phone conversation where you might have agreed to anything.
  3. Request an email with links or further documentation where you would have agreed to anything.

Emails

Scam emails are easier to weed out–especially since your own email provider will have a scam filter. Yet, a couple of these sometimes make it to your main inbox. Here is how to determine if it is a scam:

  1. Broken English- Many of these scams originate outside of the U.S., and the messages can be very choppy. Sometimes, it looks like a fill-in-the-blanks type of text that was copied from a template.
  2. Shipper Agent- This is a tell-tale sign that it is a scam. Why are they paying an outside shipper instead of having you deliver them yourself?

Snail Mail

While paper mail scams may be less common, they do still occur. If you have a website, chances are you have received a solicitation to list your website on search engines. These scams confuse business owners because they come in the form of an invoice. Here are some ways to determine if it is a scam:

  1. Read the fine print. Such scams, like from Web Listings Inc., say in small print that this is not a bill but a solicitation.
  2. Don’t send money to a company you don’t recognize. If you are unsure about the “bill,” give the company a call. Sometimes you will find, like with Web Listings Inc., they don’t have a phone number listed.
  3. Fear of losing visibility on search engines can drive people to pay without questions. Search engines have no problem finding websites new and old, so there is no need to pull out your checkbook without doing some research first.

Information is your best protection against scammers. So stay informed and question everything before you agree to send a check.

Flower Spotlight: Sunflowers

Flower Spotlight-Sunflower

Sunflowers are beautiful and perfect for summer. Their incredibly vibrant color delights us with such astonishing beauty that brightens every space. Want to learn more about sunflowers? Here is a brief history.

Origins and Symbolism

Sunflowers originated in the Americas back in 1,000 B.C. These flowers are recognized for their delightful petals, also known as “rays,” portraying the image of the sun itself. they symbolize not only happiness, but adoration, loyalty, longevity and good luck.

Legend has it, in Greek mythology, that a maiden fell in love with Apollo. She would stand in her garden and stare at Apollo as he passed in his “fiery sun chariot”. Apollo did not like people on earth looking at him and so he got tired of the girl. One day, he decided to throw an arrow at her, turning the girl into a sunflower. Even now she faces east as the sun rises and west as it goes down in the evenings, still following Apollo’s path.

To Consider

Sunflowers grow very fast! If the conditions are right, they can grown between 8-12 ft. tall in six months. These happy flowers are easy to grow in locations with full sun exposure. Once the process for the sunflower to grow is started they can very  well tolerate drought.

Availability

Sunflowers develop best in summer, according to the amount of sun they get per day. Typically, you will find this flower in yellow, but some varieties can also be found in orange and red. They are a great choice for weddings! Sunflowers fill a room with sunny charm and happiness. Perfect for bridal bouquets, since it is also a symbol of good luck.

When looking for the perfect flower to gift this summer, sunflowers should be at the very top of your list. Head to your local florist and share a little ray of sunshine!

Twitter For Florists

FSN-Twitter

Businesses all social media platforms. From Facebook to Instagram, each one carries a different audience that can become a potential customer. Twitter, being one of the top social media platforms, is one that has many florists confused at how to exactly use in their marketing strategy. Here are some ways to make it work for your business.

Twitter+ You

What makes Twitter so interesting is its constant stream of news and posts that are constantly updated throughout the day. While you may post on your Facebook page about three times a week, on Twitter you can post several times a day. Not just that, you can re-post easily from customers, fellow florists, and others you follow–which grows your viewership.

Twit Pics

Pictures are definitely on the forefront of social media. With Twitter, any picture you post definitely stands out amongst the statuses and links in a feed. This can definitely be paired up with your Instagram strategy too!

Specials

Thinking of quick specials? Do a flower power hour where you offer a special discount for only 3 hours (or more!). Just have customers retweet your post and they get to use the discount!

Don’t hesitate to use different social media platforms to get your business’ name out there! Check back with the Bloomin’ Blog for more great marketing ideas!

Sympathy Flowers Guide

No one is ever prepared when a tragedy happens. Whether it’s within the family or an acquaintance, sympathy flowers have been the universal language for “I’m here for you” –when words just aren’t enough. Here is a quick guide on sympathy flowers that will answer the top etiquette questions.

Floral Arrangements and Plants

Friends, coworkers and relatives can all send a simple floral basket or plant. Anything that reflects the personality of the loved one is suitable. These simple arrangements can be sent to the bereaved’s home, workplace or the funeral home.

Wreaths and Sprays

Often sent by a group, wreaths and sprays are perfect gifts for companies or associations who want to honor the deceased as a team. They are often displayed at the funeral or during the service, so consider sending to the funeral home.

Floral Tributes

Close family and friends often chip in for this type of arrangement. They are personalized designs based on the deceased’s hobbies, occupation or personality. These arrangements are works of art to display during the service.

Casket Arrangements

Family members, often siblings, children or grandchildren, of the deceased take care of this arrangement. Other blooms can be designed to put inside the casket, but family members must ask  funeral directors to place it before burial.

A simple arrangement can make a difference for a grieving friend or family member. It lets the recipient know that someone is thinking of them during this difficult time in their life. Your local florist can help create the thoughtful gift the bereaved needs. Check back with the Bloomin’ Blog for more tips.
