How Do You Keep Cut Holly Fresh?

Ask the Expert: Holly
How do you keep holly fresh looking ? Margaret

Plant Expert Reply:

Keeping holly looking alive and vibrant is a little tricky. Think about it! First we cut it from it life source and then we put it in a house that is warmer than its natural environment.

The key to keeping it vibrant is to create an environment as close to nature as possible.  First, keep it hydrated.  If possible, put it in water or at least mist the foliage every day.  You can create wreaths and other holly arrangements with floral foam soaked in water.  This will keep your holly hydrated.  The second key is to keep it cool.  Holly will do better if the room is slightly cooler than normal and away from any blowing heat source.

Fortunately even as holly deteriorates, it still looks pretty good.

Where Can I Find Poinsettia Retailers In Michigan?

Ask the Expert: Where can i find Poinsettia retailers in MI?
Either retailers or wholesalers that sale Poinsettias fro a fund raisers. At a low price. Harmieya

Plant Expert Reply:

Most poinsettias can be found at a Michigan Flower Shop or Garden Center between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Depending on the quantity, the shop may have a quantity discount.  Keep in mind, this time of year may seem like the perfect time for a poinsettia fundraiser.  Which is partially true – it is a good time to sell poinsettias.  However, on the wholesale level or the bulk quantity level, poinsettias may be hard to come by.

You may be able to find a poinsettia wholesaler who has a fundraising program and an over abundance of stock.  I would check the following places for Michigan poinsettia wholesalers:

The Plant Masters of Suttons Bay in Suttons Bay MI.

Molesta Floral & Greenhouses 2960 Madison SE  Grand Rapids, MI

Wojo’s in Ortonville and Davison MI.

If you can’t find poinsettias this year, plan ahead for next year.  I like to book my poinsettia at least six months ahead.  Good Luck and let me know how it goes.

Introducing A Top-of-the-Line Flower Delivery…Bicycle?

Ah, flower deliveries. The sun shining on your face, the wind rushing through your hair, fresh air filling your lungs… no, really! Since we’ve introduced our bicycle delivery trailer, deliveries to normally stressful or difficult locations have become, well, a breeze.

Boulder Blooms' Flower Delivery Bicycle

Boulder Blooms' Flower Delivery Bicycle

Our customers are becoming more and more conscious of the environmental impacts of their purchases. This is especially true of the demographic we call “Generation Y”. At our shop, we are lucky enough to be located right across the street from a college campus filled to the brim with Generation Y-ers. Our latest delivery system has been an attempt to catch the attention of these consumers and to be a little more considerate of our environment at the same time.

Delivering flowers on a bicycle not only reduces the carbon output created by driving a delivery vehicle around, but also becomes a powerful marketing tool in the right area. In our case, the frustration of finding a parking spot (scarce), paying parking fees (expensive), and still having to walk long distances to deliver flowers has been alleviated by using a bicycle rather than a car.

When we decided to purchase a delivery trailer, we assumed we’d be able to purchase something pre-fabricated to suit our needs. Unfortunately, we were not able to find exactly what we needed (what do you mean you don’t sell flower-delivery-bicycle trailers?), so we decided to make one ourselves. The closest we were able to find we purchased from www.wicycle.com; a landscape trailer with no cover to shelter arrangements. We are lucky enough to have a friend who was able to fabricate a customized, hinged cover for the trailer (I saw the inside of this guy’s toolbox once- he travels with his own fire extinguisher. This is a good friend to have.) and we finished the cover with brightly colored decals of our logo, phone number, and website. The inside of the trailer will be lined with a customized foam delivery system to help with stability, although the design of the trailer is deceptively stable as-is.

Our bicycle will be used primarily to deliver campus deliveries, arrangements to the mainly pedestrian downtown area, and to other areas with high levels of foot-traffic. In such a bicycle-friendly city, the marketing possibilities are endless- we can hand out free stems with our contact info before holidays and we are looking into a mobile vendor license so we can tote wrapped dozen-rose bouquets to sell on campus. The visibility and marketing impact we get from the trailer was well worth the small expense- two fringe benefits from what began as an environmentally conscious idea.

The Perfect Gift For Your First Love

As you know, every flower has a particular meaning. I was intrigued by the flower meaning of lilacs. “First love” took me by surprise and struck me as an excellent gift for my sweetheart. Of course, he’s not as into flowers as I am but he does love things that have a significant meaning. He’s just really sly about it. *grin*

A Lilac Bloom

A Lilac Bloom

By the by, lilac can also represent “youthful innocence” which I think really ties into first love. You can be 150 but the moment you fall for someone, you’re right back to that giddy and excited feeling. That’s why many “feel young again” when they fall in love with someone special.

Whether man or woman, your first love deserves to receive a few lilac blooms. It’s a beautiful, fragrant flower. Even those features are significant as they speak of how you regard your partner. Does she always smell good no matter what she’s been doing? Does his handsome face catch you off guard sometimes? It’s ok. This tends to happen with everyone who is still very much in love with their first love. I know I am!

If you want a significant, romantic gift for your first love, choose lilac or an arrangement from your local florist that features lilac. The occasion can be special or “just because”. Either way, it’s a real treat for your sweetheart to know that you still get dreamy-eyed or never stopped seeing the world through rose-colored glasses because of them.

Here Are Some Fun Christmas Card Messages for Children

Children are the greatest part of life, pure and simple. Everything about them is adorable. Stressful at times, but their constant love and innocence is so endearing that it’s hard to live without that influence. One of the best things about Christmas is watching children open their gifts. Their little faces light up. To watch this is like being blessed with a tiny little angel for a few moments. Whether a parent or not, it is impossible not to love the way that children react on Christmas Day.

Precious moments under the Christmas tree make giving Christmas gifts to children all the more pleasant. Many choose to send flowers to nieces, nephews or grandchildren that live too far away for a holiday visit. Some send Christmas flowers to kids at school for a special treat before the holiday break.

Whatever the reason, it is best to have the right enclosure card message. Even if you can’t see their tiny little face, knowing that they are reading the perfect card message makes it easy to envision their smiles and laughing eyes. Local florists want to make sure that you get this special moment and have chosen these as their favorite Christmas card messages for children.

Decorate Your Thanksgiving With A Plentiful Cornucopia

Cornucopias are awesome. They are unique, beautiful and bountiful. They are traditional representations of Thanksgiving. What’s not to love?

Did you know that the cornucopia is rich in history and is as much as strong symbol of Greek mythology as it is a representation of the American Thanksgiving? Yeah. I didn’t either until I began to search for ideas online that my local florist could use. I’m not super crafty so I figured I’d rely on the experts for this one. That aside, here’s a brief history of cornucopias.

A Brief History of Cornucopias: (told you)

The cornucopia’s history can be traced as far back as the fifth century B.C. Obviously that’s a bit longer than the early days of the American colonies. Though the mythology varies after centuries of retelling, Greek legend has it that the first cornucopia belonged to Amalthea. If you ever wondered who nursed Zeus as a baby, it was the nymph Amalthea. She used a goat’s horn that had broken off and filled it with her breast milk so that Zeus could suckle.

One legend states that Amalthea was a goat herself and the horn was hers broken off by Zeus as they were playing together. He felt bad and gave it back to her,now retrofitted with supernatural powers. The power, as all of the legends concur, had the ability to fill itself with whatever the owner wished. It became a symbol of plenty and that’s how it earned many of its nicknames.

See? The story is really quite interesting. I wonder how many of the pilgrims knew the legend and used cornucopias for this reason (their representation of plenty, abundance). As they were religious pilgrims under the Christian religion, I doubt they modeled their celebration after Greek mythology but it’s an interesting speculation nonetheless. What do you think?

This Thanksgiving, why not decorate your table with a plentiful cornucopia surrounded by fresh flowers. Not only will the fragrance smell as good as dinner, but it will also be a festive decoration that will be a surefire conversation starter.

To buy cornucopias for your table, use FlowerShopNetwork.com to contact your local florist. You may also click the picture of your favorite cornucopia to buy one from your local florist. [Read more…]

Is Distilled Nutrient Water Good For Lucky Bamboo?

Hi Jamie,

I found your email on a post of yours on a gardener website.  My lucky bamboo has a yellow stalk (stem) but the bottom is green and plant part is green.  What can I do to save this plant…  If anything.  I bought some distilled nutrient water from health food store.  I had to move plant as I was moving and at some point it may have gotten a bit more of sun then it liked.  I emptied water refilled container with distilled, although didn’t take it out of the gravel rocks in container when changed the water.  Kids used tap water and I may have at some point forgetting about the water issue.  Now I have a gallon of distilled w/minerals and hoping to fix it.  Can I, also is another option to do a cutting from above the stalk part or must it have that.. maybe that’s a foolish question.  But, I’m not very good with plants with the exception of a spider plant I’ve had for 10 yrs. Darien

Jamie’s Reply
I am not familiar with distilled nutrient water.  I assume that if it came from a health food store it has been supplemented with nutrients for human consumption. You can check the label for the nutrients that have been added to the water. Although humans and plants need the same basic nutrients, this water may not be the best thing to use for your plants. Lucky bamboo is very sensitive to certain chemicals and minerals which is why I recommend distilled water. The distilling process removes minerals and chemicals from the water.

I would go back to using a plain distilled water. I would also remove the yellowing part of the lucky bamboo.  You can cut the top of the lucky bamboo off and the remaining stalk and roots will allow the plant to form new leaves.  If the top of the lucky bamboo is green you can cut it and new roots will form.  I wrote a post a while back that demonstrates how to propagate new lucky bamboo from this type of situation.  The photos and detailed explanation in the above post will help you determine how and where to cut your lucky bamboo.
Good luck and keep me posted.
