Air-Filtering Plants For Your Home

As we head into a new season, a lot of us start preparing for allergies. However, did you know that there are plants that can purify the air you breathe and help during allergy season?

In our air, we have many toxins that mostly derive from products we may use in our household. NASA conducted a Clean Air Study to determine which indoor plants are the best for air filtering. As it turns out, many are commonly found at local flower shops!

Here is part of an infographic by Love The Garden that outlines the 18 air-filtering plants that NASA recommends for improving your air quality. Click the photo to read the full infographic! Once you have determined which plant is right for you, contact your local florist to find your perfect air-purifying plant!

Flower Spotlight: Gardenia

There are many beautiful flowers that are perfect for different occasions. Today, we will focus on the Gardenia—a simple, elegant and aromatic bloom.

Origins and Symbolism

Gardenias are native to Africa, Asia, Australasia and Oceania. This flower was named after Alexander Garden, a Scottish physician and naturalist who lived in Charleston, South Carolina. Gardenia means “garden flower” and is often used in weddings to symbolize the love and purity of marriage. A solo gardenia or bouquet tells the recipient “I think I’m in love with you,” also making it the perfect flower to send to your crush!

To Consider

Gardenias are strongly scented and grow in the shape of a star with 5-12 petals. The flower is part of an evergreen shrub that can grow up to 49 ft. tall and needs a lot of sunlight and humidity. This flower is toxic to cats, dogs and horses, so make sure to keep your four-legged friends away from this beauty!

Availability

This flowering plant is part of the coffee family. There are 142 different species that can be found in colors white, ivory and yellow. The most popular species is the Cape Jasmine and it is originally grown in China. Gardenias make beautiful cut flowers, amazing corsages and wedding bouquets or arrangements for decoration. Unfortunately, their vase life is very short, but can be prolonged with good cutting techniques. A single gardenia can be gifted or simply placed in a room, floating in a bowl or dish, to give it a more elegant touch.

When planning a wedding, gardenias are a great choice for flowers. They are not only beautiful, but the symbolism behind it makes them very special. Head to your local florist and surprise someone with gardenias!

5 Reason To Send Flowers: September ’15

Every month brings the opportunity to celebrate the people we love. Whether it’s a birthday or a goofy holiday, fill the day with flowers. Here are five opportunities for happiness!

1. Hug Your Boss Day – September 4th

This day was created by TipTopJob to create healthy working relationships. A good work environment is proven to make people more productive and often that environment is created by our boss. Take time today to hug your boss and show how much you truly appreciate them. An arrangement with bright flowers is a great way to show that appreciation too!

2. Labor Day – September 7th

This holiday is dedicated to all the hardworking people out there! Treat yourself with a beautiful flower arrangement for your home or office. Perhaps share some of the joy that comes with flowers to a hard worker you know. Be the source of their happiness, at least today!

3. Grandparent’s Day – September 13th

Our parents discipline us with tender loving care and our grandparents are the ones to spoil us! We love these beautiful, delicate people whose wisdom guide us in the right direction. A beautiful plant or an arrangement with classic flowers, like roses, are always a good choice for this occasion. Make them know you are grateful of their unconditional love!

4. World Gratitude Day – September 21st

Gratitude Day originated in Hawaii in the year 1965. A group of people decided it was a good idea to have one day, every year, to express gratitude for the many wonderful things in life. This is a chance for you to thank those who make your world a better place. Perhaps giving a little bit back in the form of flowers. One day a year can definitely make a positive impact and brighten someone’s day!

5. National Good Neighbor Day – September 28th

This is a great opportunity to build a more meaningful relationship with our neighbors. On this day, take this opportunity to reward a good neighbor! Gibe the people next door a plant for their garden or a colorful arrangement for their home. This will definitely surprise someone who has been a  pleasure to call your neighbor.

Happiness doesn’t have to be in the form of an expensive gift. Sometimes a simple arrangement can make all the difference! Head to your local florist and share the love!

Floral Trend Predictions for the Winter Wedding Season

With summer coming to a close we face the realization that winter weddings are coming soon! Here are a few of our predictions of what will be trending this winter!

Chic and Glamorous

This coming winter wedding season, you can bring glamour back to the wedding scene.

Using romantic, large-bloomed florals and mixing them with traditional red or white roses can draw the eye and make any arrangement pop.

If you are planning on sticking to the sophisticated look, using accents of metallic colors such as gold, silver and copper can add a touch of class to any winter wedding floral decor.

Warm and Cozy

Adding a cozy inviting theme turns natural elements into a fun and intimate affair. Mixing florals with natural decor is sure to create a breathtaking aesthetic.

Filler flowers, including baby’s breath or waxflowers, and non-floral elements, such as wool and berried branches, will mix-in nicely with simple blooms such as roses and lilies.

Accents of natural colors like evergreens, rich browns and deep reds will harmonize this winter wedding theme.

Home for the Holidays

The Christmas theme can mix in effortlessly with a sophisticated style. Textiles like velvet, faux fur and woven textures will enhance an elegant holiday-themed wedding.

A Christmas-inspired wedding can accentuate traditional red roses with boxwood or holly. Pinecones, cranberries and mistletoe mixed within the bridal bouquet can also add a holiday touch.

Don’t hesitate to mix a bit of the elegant with a bit of the earthy this winter wedding season! For more great ideas and tips, visit the Bloomin’ Blog!
