Vamos A Celebrar El Día de Los Abuelos!

Atravez del año hay muchos días festivos que son especialmente para celebrar a una persona muy especial en su familia. Dos de estos días festivos es El Día de Las Madres y El Día de Los Padres. Puede usted adivinar que otro día festivo es uno de los mas especiales alrededor del mundo? Pues si usted todavía no sabe la respuesta, es El Día de Los Abuelos! Este día esta lleno de amor y felicidad mas que cualquier otro día festivo. Usted debe preguntarse por qué ? Bueno, los abuelos son los familiares mas favoritos de cada miembro de la familia.

Los Abuelos son las personas que unen a toda la familia, y tambien que tienen mas experiencia y conocimiento que los de mas. Cuando hay un problema o necesita con quien hablar, los abuelos son los primeros en ayudar. En las comunidades Hispanas, este día es bien celebrado. Muchas de las veces, este día tan especial es celebrado con una fiesta pequeña que incluye a toda la familia. En estas fiestas todos ayudan a cocinar una comida deliciosa. Unas comidas muy populares son : tamales, arroz, frijoles, sopes, menudo y finalmente para el postre flan o otro tipo de pastel hecho en casa.

Despues de la comida, casi todas las familas Hispanas hacen un baile pequeño. Para esto, tocan musica mexicana y ranchera, y todos se ponen a bailar. Esta parte de la fiesta es la parte que le gusta mas a todos. A quien no le gusta bailar verdad ? Que mejor manera de terminar una noche tan especial.

Demas de celebrar con una fiesta llena de comida y musica, la parte mas emocionante son los regalos. Hay miles de tipos de regalos que pueden ser regalados para El Día de Los Abuelos. Unos ejemplos son relojes, fotos de la familia, cuadros, dulces, tazas y mucho mas. Siente que cada año le esta regalando lo mismo a sus abuelos?

Pues porque no comprar algo especial que nunca se olvida.

Sabe que ademas de los otros regalos, flores son el regalo mas preferido atravez del mundo. Se pregunta porque? Flores son una manera muy facil de expresar lo que usted siente. Claro que cuando un regalo es dado a un abuelo, no hay nada mas que quiere hacer que expresar el amor que usted tiene por ellos. Demuestra cuanto los amas con un arreglo de rosas hermoso! Todo el mundo sabe que rosas son una representación de amor. O tal vez quieres hacer tus abuelos sonreir? Pues, un arreglo de girasoles seria perfecto! Cualquier expression que quieras enviar, flores lo dicen todo.

Preparing Bird Of Paradise For the Long Haul

Ask the Expert: How do I successfully “open” Birds of Paradise?

Twice a year I install flowers on the high altar and in the Lady Chapel in memory of my mother. Once on or about September 13 and again on or about April 7, or Resurrection Day depending on Lent.

My mother adored yellow roses and Birds of Paradise. When she died the only floral work was a huge (double) cascade casket piece made up of the aforementioned roses, birds and greens.

I have tried ever since to use the two when I install the flowers. I find the combination perfect in April for the Resurrection and in September as Fall approaches.

I tend to tear the pod. The “petals” seem very delicate and I lose a lot of them. At least 2-3 out of ten never thrive. They look dead. I normally pick up the flowers on Friday afternoon and install them before 02:00 PM on Saturday.

Like funeral work, the flowers do not have to look good for very long. The goal is they last through noon day prayer on Wednesday. Nit a huge problem if they do not.

I am purchasing the flowers through a wholesale florist. We have done business with them as long as I can remember with no problems whatsoever. It’s me, not the flowers. Edward

Correctly prepping the flowers is the key. When you pick the flowers up run lukewarm water over the flower heads. Then manually open the bracts and gently pull florets up. In our Elements of Design: Preparing Birds of Paradise, we demonstrate how to do this.

I also recut the stems of the Birds of Paradise. Another big factor is to make sure the Birds are stored at a temperature above 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Propagating Morning Glory

It is possible , but a better way would be to layer a part of the stem that is attached to some leaves. Once the roots have formed you can cut it off of the parent plant.

To layer make a small wound on the stem and then cover with a small amount of soil. This will cause the plant to create new roots.

Of course, seeds are the best way to propagate morning glory. You can collect the seeds and germinate them at a later date. Store the seeds in your refrigerator vegetable crisper (place in a zip lock bag) until you are ready for them. When you are ready to germinate the seeds soak them in luke warm water for 24hrs. Then place in soil and keep moist until seeds germinate.

What to Do With Lilies Bulbs After Flower Has Died

In my zone 6, I leave the lilies in the ground year round and only dig them up when I need to thin them. After the blooms are finished on my lilies, I leave the foliage up to allow the plant to collect as much energy for next year. When the foliage dies, I will remove it from the garden and make sure my lilies have a good covering of mulch before winter. A couple months before they bloom, I add some fertilizer to the area.

If you are in an area when you can’t leave the bulbs, wait until the foliage dies back and them dig the bulbs. Remove all the soil and place the bulbs in a cool dark and dry place until you can replant them next season.

Each contestant has 2 hours to interpret a chosen artwork — in this case, a beautiful raku ceramic vase created by Kerry Gonzalez, Winston-Salem, NC. Designers push their creativity to it’s limits for this challenging competition. Each entry was completely different that the last, from color to materials to size…

Using Amaryllis In A Wedding Bouquet

White amaryllis are certainly beautiful flowers.

I have seen a wedding bouquet with white amaryllis and tulips which was designed by Seattle Flowers. This hand-tied bouquet used a beautiful satin ribbon embellished with pearls.

Keep in mind amaryllis stems are very thick and a hand-tied bouquet is most likely the only option.

Since the amaryllis will be the focal point of the bouquet, you might use a light, airy foliage instead of flowers. This way the bridal bouquet will be luscious instead of over-whelming. If you including other flowers, make sure you choose flowers with the same texture like Roses, tulips or orchids. Your wedding florist will be able to show you a variety of flowers that will work with the amaryllis. They will also be able to check the availability of amaryllis in February.

Typically amaryllis are only available during the Christmas season. Your wedding florist will be able to check the availability of amaryllis in February. If the amaryllis is unavailable, you might consider ‘Casa Blanca’ lilies. They will give you the same beautiful look.

Trend Alert: Sushi Flowers!

Sushi lover or not, you have to appreciate the care, artistry and composition a sushi chef puts into their work. Sushi is quickly becoming one of the trendiest foods around! Even if you don’t like eating the raw-fish rolls, you can still get your hands on cute sushi gear — from stuffed animals to jump drives — sushi is invading pop culture!

Don’t forget our favorite way to use sushi — in trendy floral designs! Check out these great sushi-themed flowers we saw at floral shows this summer:

This dynamic design uses greens and flowers as sushi rolls. They recycled stems and wired them on as chopsticks! This design is very impressive and so easy to do! Great way to get some use out of those to-short, scrap flowers! The tray he selected works great for the presentation. You might also consider inexpensive plates (especially in unique shapes), lined box lids, bamboo-style place mats, simple wooden blocks and almost any container with an Asian-theme.

This design takes sushi flowers in a completely different style! You can see the little box of sushi, but also individual rolls are on the bamboo place mat. The rolls are very simple to do too — just wrap your flower heads in leaves (water pick or use a small block of floral foam for water source). This designer used chopsticks for this sushi floral design. These sushi roll flowers make GREAT hostess gifts! Plus your computer guy’s nerdy girlfriend would love these geek flowers (I would)!

Not familiar with sushi? Do a quick Google image search for sushi and you will see hundreds of styles you can interpret into floral designs!

Florists, sushi designs are easy and small. Try a sushi flowers promotion! Send a couple of little example arrangements to areas you know will be frequented by teens to college students, perhaps a college student center, movie theater lobby, or your local sushi bar! Display with a card telling about your promotion. (Also, promote it on Facebook!) To really hit with the young people, offer several size and price options.

What Is This Yellow Flower With Purple Foliage?

We bought a plant today in one of the private gardens open to the public for the charity. The leaves are dark (blackish purple) with yellow flowers about 5cm and about 1 and half metres. They told us it is called Clarion but alas we can’t find it anywhere online or in the books. We need to know how to take care of it. There are still some closed buds on it so it is just starting to flower at this time of year. Jacqueline

Flower Shop Network‘s Plant Expert Reply: The people who sold you the plant were correct in calling it a Clarion. They just didn’t tell you the complete name – Dahlia ‘Clarion’. What you have is a type of Dahlia. For classification purposes dahlias are divided into various classes according to their form and size. This particular Dahlia is in the single class. This means the flowerheads are composed of a single row of uniform, evenly spaced ray florets.
