What Is This Spikey Pink Pinecone Looking Flower

kalmia-latifoliaAsk the Expert: can you identify this plant please. As you can see by the photograph, before the flower opens it looks rather spikey like a pink pinecone but opens into a simple type of bell flower. Can it be grown in Zone 3? Kate

Flower Shop Network‘s Plant Expert Reply:

This flower identification was a hard one for me. So, I contacted Rick Pudwell at the Memphis Botanical Garden. Luckily for me, he was able to identify it. Here is his identification:

It appears to be Mountain Laurel, Kalmia latifolia. I t is a native shrub in the North Eastern U.S. through the Smoky Mountains. It is difficult to grow unless you live in an area with similar conditions.

Mountain Laurel’s cupped-shaped flowers bloom from late spring to mid-summer. It has pink to white flowers with crimson to dark pink buds. This dense bushy shrub is sometimes called Calico bush. They like to grow in moist, humus-rich soil. in partial shade or moist sunny areas.

Flowers in the News: June

Share

June has been busy month for flowers, which have found their way into everything from science journals to the local news. Here is best in floral industry news for this month:

Rare MSU Plant Blooms for the First Time in 15 Years

The amorphophallus titanum, or corpse flower, bloomed at the Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden June 11, filling the greenhouse with its signature scent. “It’s so big and it smells so nasty, like a dead animal on the side of the road that’s been there for about seven to eight days, but it’s a way cool thing,” said Norm Lownds, curator for the Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden and associate professor in the MSU Department of Horticulture. “It’s really unique because it flowers so infrequently.”

The corpse flower is often referred to as the largest flower in the world. However, the corpse flower isn’t a flower at all, but rather a cluster of flowers, or an inflorescence. Plant biology graduate student Michael Grillo told The State News that the corpse flower evolved to use its stench to attract beetles and flies to pollinate.

According to The State News, the flower has been part of the teaching collection for decades and cared for by greenhouse manager John Mugg. However, Mugg was teaching an environmental science study abroad album in Hawaii when the plant bloomed.

Hundreds of Flowers Stolen from Spokane, WA, Cemetery

Groundskeepers at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane, Washington, noticed hundreds of  potted flowers missing days after the cemetery sold about 750 of the arrangements to the public for Memorial Day. A tip led the groundskeepers to a home selling the flowers at a discounted price. The flowers started reappearing after those who bought them saw the report on a KHQ broadcast. Groundskeepers said about 6 potted flowers have been returned as of June 8.

Thousands of Sunflowers Delivered to Michael Jackson’s Crypt

After hearing Lisa Marie Presley complain that Jackson’s Glendale, California‘s mausoleum was looking bare, grower Jason Levin delivered $3,000 to $5,000 worth of sunflowers to the heavily-guarded site. According to MSNBC, Levin, owner of The Sunflower Guy in San Diego County, loaded the flowers and drove three hours to make the delivery.

Salt Lake City Council Battling Budget to Keep City Buds in Bloom

Facing a nearly $19 million budget shortfall, Salt Lake City, Utah, city council members are working eliminate a proposed $230,000 cut, which would shut down the city’s famed greenhouses and remove blooms at the International Peace Gardens, Liberty Park, Washington Square and the monument plaza in Sugar House. Council Chairman J.T. Martin told the Salt Lake Tribune that letting the flowers die and replanting them during more stable economic times would “cost taxpayers 10 times as much.”international-peace-garden

One of the most famous of the city’s gardens, The Peace Gardens, boasts native plants, including 30 types of Swedish lilacs and Magnolia trees from China, arranged in ornate displays. Irene Wiesenberg, chairwoman of the International Peace Gardens Committee, said that the proposed cuts would force much of the garden to replaced by grass and watered 25 percent of the time.

Studies Confirm Flowers Improve Quality of Life

According to the Ukiah Daily Journal in Ukiah, California, scientists are finding a link between flower’s ability to improve moods and increased quality of life. Scientists performed three studies, published in the April 2005 edition of Evolutionary Psychology, that demonstrated flowers’ ability to positively impact mood. In the first study 147 women reported elevated moods for three days after being presented with a single flower.

In another study, 122 men and women were handed either a flower, pen, or nothing while riding on an elevator. Those who received a flower spoke more, stood closer to others, and smiled more often during the ride. The last study involved delivering bouquets to 113 men and women in a retirement community. The recipients reported positive moods and increased memory function.

It’s no secret that flowers can perk up a mood. However, as scientists learn more about how to harness their positive power, we could potentially see them being used in a clinic setting to improve healing and quality of life.

What Is YOUR Birthday Promotion?

A great promotion idea to think about this summer is a birthday promotion. With the easy advertising abilities of Facebook and other social networks, it’s easy to accomplish. Check out these two grate ideas to get you started! If you already have some sort of birthday promo going, let us know in the comments below!

birthday-giftCoupon/Discount Promotion

Just a little gift from you, the florist, only on their birthday. This can be a great on-going promotion you can share on your flower shop’s Facebook Page. Update your status weekly to say “Come in on your birthday and receive a $X coupon!” This is a fantastic way to get your Facebook audience into your shop! Plus, this encourages word-of-mouth advertising, which is much more credible than any other form.

Free Birthday Flowers

Offer a free birthday boutonniere to your customers on their birthdays. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, just a quick, one-flower-and-ribbon boutonniere to show everyone “HEY! I’m special, it’s my birthday!” Let them pick the ribbon color to make it more ‘personalized’. They will be the envy of their office!

These promotions won’t discourage sending birthday flowers; rarely does one send birthday flowers to themselves. Just make sure the person actually having the birthday is the one who gets whatever type of discount you choose to give by checking ID. While they’re in your flower shop, tell them about upcoming promotions or events you might be having. Also suggest them to ‘like’ you on Facebook if they have not already. Everyone who sees the boutonniere will ask about it and they will tell them all about their favorite florist — you. “Add her on Facebook, she’s always posting great promotions and deals!”

Facebook tells you when your friends birthdays are coming up. Simply post a little note on their wall about your Birthday Promotion a few days before their big day.

This post for the Flower Shop Network Bloomin’ Blog is brought to you by Providence, Rhode Island Local Florists.

Personalized Gift Baskets and Arrangements: the New Trend for Dad.

Think back to how much thought you put into finding the perfect gift for Mother’s Day. Wouldn’t you like to make your dad feel just as special on Father’s Day? You may think to yourself “…men don’t want flowers…” but nothing could be further from the truth! The key to this success is personalization!

Giving a floral arrangement or gift basket that is personalized will undoubtedly make every father who receives one feel exceptionally special.  These personalized gifts create the opportunity for you to show your dad exactly how you feel about him! Following are a few ideas for themed baskets.

  • fathers-day-basketGadgets & Gizmos: for the dad who always has the “newest” and “hottest” items on the market!! If your florist does not carry these items in the store, bring something in for them to incorporate into the elaborate, futuristic arrangement. Let your florist be as creative as they like by coming up with something new and unique that isn’t available in an “ordinary” flower arrangement or gift basket!
  • Grillin’ It Up: most dads are known as “King of the Grill.” A basket filled with grilling essentials and recipes is perfect for this guy.
  • Sports Galore: what father doesn’t have at least one sport he follows with the utmost dedication? Your florist can create a beautiful arrangement with flowers matching the team’s colors. Include some memorabilia for that team/sport or take tickets to your florist and ask her to tuck them into the arrangement.
  • Food, Food, and More Food: for the dad who loves to indulge himself! They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach; curb his appetite with a basket overflowing with gourmet foods. Your local florist may be willing to create a fruit/nut basket or even use chocolates and/or candy.
  • Popular Pasttimes: fishing, camping, golfing, running, bicycling, hiking… the list goes on! Dads find many ways to spend their spare time– what does your dad like to do? Most of these hobbies are nature related; ask the florist to create a rustic arrangement… perfect for dads that are on the go.
  • Play that Funky Music: music loving dads will go crazy for this theme! Choose a favorite artist, genre or decade to inspire the florist and let them voice their creative expression!  This fun theme could include tickets to a local concert or a CD tucked into the arrangement.
  • Cultural Buff: this guy is up to date on the latest and greatest movies, books, art and more. Since this dad has an appreciation for the finer things in life, find out if your florist carries any rare or unique flowers or plants. Tickets to an art exhibit or a new book are great pieces to include in this basket!

Personalized Food BasketTip: What ever basket you choose, discuss the options with your local florist to create the perfect custom gift basket or arrangement.  They may have their own creative ideas to carry on the theme with the container, basket and accent pieces. The colors of the arrangement are also vital in continuing the theme throughout the entire gift basket. Make sure you and your florist have the same vision for this creative gift.

Father’s Day is less than a week away, Find a local florist and ask them to work with you to create the perfect personalized gift basket and/or floral arrangement for your dad. You will be surprised at the amount of dedication and creativity your florist will put into this project. Don’t forget the card! An original and heartfelt message from you will send your dads emotions over the top. Your dad won’t forget the effort you (and your florist!) put forth to make this Father’s Day his best one yet!

What Is This Unusual Tree Found In Arkansas

Ask the Expert: What is this tree with strange fruit?

We found this tree on our new land in Arkansas and have no idea what it is, can you help us? Debbie

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:
The tree looked familiar to me, but I couldn’t quite identify it. So I turned to Neal Adams and my good friend Janet Carson (with the Arkansas Extension Service) and both believe it is a royal paulownia tree–Paulownia tomentosa.  This tree is sometimes called Royal Empress.

Janet, also, told me that they produce spikes of purple flowers in the spring followed by these woody seed capsules. When the seeds pop open they scatter seeds all over and you will find some of the most amazing sized leaves ever. They are a regular jack in the beanstalk plant when young. They bloomed the best (and at a younger age) this year than I have ever seen.

What To Do When Tips OF Peace Lilies Turn Brown

Ask the Expert: Tips of the Peace Lily plant

What do you do when the tips and the sides of the leaves of the Peace Lily plant start turning brown. I have a huge plant in the office and so far it is doing extremely well but the tips of the leaves are turning brown right at the very point.

Thank you for any help you can send my way. Shell

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:
You can trim the brown tips and sides off the leaves. What is more important is to figure out why the leaves are turning brown in the first place. What and sunlight are the major causes of browning in Spathiphyllum (peace lily) leaves. Make sure the plant is staying evenly moist and that sunlight is not beating directly down on the leaves. I would alos check for any signs of insects. Once you correct the problem the leaves should stop turning brown.

What is this Yellow Thistle Like Bloom?

Ask the Expert: Yellow Dandelion-like Flower – can you identify
There is a perennial in our garden (in a house we bought last fall) that recently bloomed, but I cannot identify it!  I can’t find it any garden books I have, and none of my flower-loving friends can identify it.  I saw (what appeared to be) the same plant (although it was not as tall) in someone else’s yard recently, but their’s has a purple flower.  The attached photos show the flower and entire plant, albeit they just started to bloom (early to mid-June).

Thank you for your help!! It\’s been a mystery… Jen

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:

This past weekend, I was at the Missouri Botanical Garden and saw several of these blooming plants. What you have is Centaurea macrocephala commonly known as the Armenian basket flower. It is hardy in zone 3 thru 8. Blooms June thru July and is perennial. This thistle like yellow flower is sometimes called  globe centaurea or yellow hardhat and can be used as a dried flower.  It is low maintenance full-sun plant that requires minimum watering.

Centaurea (Hardheads, Knapweed) are in the Asteraceae family and consist of 450 species of annuals, biennuals, perennials and subsrubs. So you many see many different, but similar looking plants in your area including the purple one in your neighbor’s yard.

Peace Lily Leaves Are Drying And Turning Brown, Why?

Ask the Expert: why RE THE LEAVES ON MY PEACE LILLY TURNING BROWN

TURNING BROWN ALL OVER AND DRYING Christeen Baker

Flower Shop Network’s Plant Expert Reply:

Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) leaves can turn brown: if the water used is highly chlorinated – if intense sunlight bears directly down on the leaves – if the plant has not been kept evely moist.  Only To detyou will be able to determine which of these factors is the culprit.  To remedy the situation:

If chlorinated water is the problem, expose your open container of water to the air for 24 hours before using. Or, water your plant with distilled or bottle water.

If sunlight is the issue, move plant away from the intense sunlight.

If irregualer watering is the cause, check the plant every couple of days and water when soil begins to dry out.

With in a couple of week the plant should begin to produce new growth.
