The True Meaning Behind Parents’ Day

Did you know that Parents’ Day promotes diversity and religious freedom? Keep reading to learn the true purpose of Parents’ Day and how you can celebrate!

Many Americans do not know the true history behind Parents’ Day and believe that it is just another holiday crafted to promote spending and gift-giving. The purpose of this national holiday is much deeper, aiming to strengthen our communities and country.

What is Parents’ Day?

In 1994 President Bill Clinton signed into law the resolution unanimously adopted by the U.S. Congress establishing the fourth Sunday of every July as Parents’ Day, a perennial day of commemoration similar to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. According to the Congressional Resolution, Parents’ Day is established for, “recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.” The establishment of Parents’ Day was the result of a bipartisan, multiracial and interfaith coalition of religious, civic and elected leaders who recognized the need to promote responsible parenting in our society and to uplift ideal parental role models, especially for our nation’s children. Since the creation of this annual day of commemoration, local faith communities, elected officials and activists throughout the nation have creatively launched many activities around the theme of Parents’ day designed to celebrate and strengthen the traditional, two-parent family.

Parents’ Day is a time for every religion and race across the country to come together to support the family. Our culture emphasizes self-gratification, which is the opposite of parenthood. Parenthood requires selfless, unconditional love. Parents’ Day aims to promote the need for responsible parenting and a commitment to the family.

What is Parent’s Day?

Parent’s Day was signed into existence by President Bill Clinton in 1994 to be a holiday that recognizes, uplifts and supports the role of parents.

Think of it as a combination of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day except that instead of lauding one member of the parenting team, you are celebrating them together as a team. A sort of exaltation of parenting in general.

Father’s Day or Mother’s Day can both be designated as a day to celebrate those physically responsible for bringing you into this world. But Parent’s Day celebrates those who made the hard sacrifices, stayed up late nights, and did everything possible to ensure you reached adulthood. In short, those merry folk who raised you. These may be the same people or not, but either way, they deserve some love.

Keep It Local

When you buy flowers this Parent’s Day, don’t forget the shop around the corner. Your local flower artist offers so much when it comes to finding the perfect flowers. Because you speak to them directly, you aren’t limited by a photographed list of available options. You tell the florist what YOU want, and they will do their best to help make that request a beautiful reality. And if you’re not sure what you want? That’s not a problem either!

Don’t forget that your local florist is also a flower artist. If you want something special and maybe a little different, don’t be afraid to set them free. The results are sure to be something really impressive.

So now that you have that perfect gift idea for Parent’s Day, don’t let another day go by without contacting your local florist!

5 Best Reasons to Send Flowers in July

Summer is finally in full swing and July offers plenty of excuses to have a good time. Besides the perfect weather, cool breezes and backyard barbecues, here are five additional excuses to shower your loved ones with flowers!American Spirit

#1 – Independence Day – July 4th – Happy Birthday, America! Who needs fireworks when you have flowers? If you want an explosion of colors, contact your local florist for an incomparable arrangement that will leave you ooh-ing and aww-ing. But hey, why limit yourself to one or the other? It would be fine with us if you wanted to have both!

#2 – Bastille Day – July 14th – Since we have independence on the brain already, don’t let this French holiday pass by unremarked. The first storming of the Bastille occurred in 1789 and has stood as a symbol of the rise of the modern French nation. Like the American 4th of July, this is a day for picnics, fireworks … and flowers!

Made in the USA#3 – Parents Day – July 27th – Yes, we’ve already had Mothers Day and Fathers Day, but Parents Day celebrates “the role of parents in the rearing of children.” This holiday is not only good for traditional families, but it is quickly being embraced by other, non-traditional family units as well. So let your parents know they reared you right with a lovely bouquet or other arrangement.

#4 – July Birthdays – Do you have a friend or loved one with a birthday in July? There is no better way to say, “Happy Birthday” than with a gorgeous arrangement from your local florist. You can get most anything you like, and they can even create it based on a theme of your choosing! Is your loved one a Game of Thrones fan? Let your florist make something to take her breath away!

#5 – Summertime Fun – All Month Long – Red White & True BlueIf the four reasons above don’t satisfy your need for fantastic florals, don’t forget to celebrate the beauty and fun of summer. Flowers make some of the best decoration, and no backyard barbecue is complete without some fabulous floral accents. So contact your local florist and see what they can whip up to make your outdoor party look magnificent!

Don’t Let Parent’s Day Pass Unremarked Again

Celebrate Parent's DayIt’s that time again! Woohoo! Alright! Parent’s Day is just around the corner! Well, c’mon everybody why are you just sitting there? It’s Parent’s Day! It’s … Parent’s Day … it … woo? Okay, I know that this holiday still doesn’t have a lot of national traction just yet, but if you’re not familiar, it’s past time to get familiar. This is one holiday to which each of us needs to be paying more attention.

Parent’s Day History

For those of us who don’t know, Parent’s Day was signed into existence by President Bill Clinton in 1994 to be a holiday that, and I’m paraphrasing here, recognizes, uplifts and supports the role of parents. Since that day, the fourth Sunday in July has been designated as Parent’s Day. Think of it as a combination of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, except that instead of lauding one member of the parenting team, they are celebrated together as a team.

But wait, that’s not all! It also exalts the act of parenting in general. Father’s Day or Mother’s Day can both be used to celebrate the person who was physically responsible for bringing you into this world. Parent’s Day celebrates the one(s) who made the sacrifices, stayed up the late nights, and did everything possible to make your life full. In short, the one(s) who raised you.

Say ‘Thank You’ with Flowers – The Perfect Parent’s Day Gift

Flowers for Parent's DayNow, as a FlowerShopNetwork.com writer, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention flowers in some capacity within this post. Fortunately for me, flowers are not only an acceptable gift for Parent’s Day, or really any occasion, they are quite possibly the perfect gift.

Flowers symbolize fragile beauty that must be nurtured and cared for in order to flourish. Sound familiar? Is it not a perfect representation of childhood? For after all, what is a child if not the embodiment of fragile beauty in need of nurture? Mature blooms are the result of careful rearing, just as you are the result of your parents’ labors. What could be more perfect than that?

Refuse to let this year’s Parent’s Day sneak past you. The holiday, and your parents, are worth celebrating! Parent’s Day is July 28th — this Sunday! Call your local florist to order your parent’s the perfect gift.
